On Monday, I realized Simon had left his spare phone at home and rushed to deliver it to his office.
On the way, a call came in.
The caller ID showed: "IF."
What a strange nickname! Who is this 'If' ? 'If' was often followed by something someone wishes for.
For years, he has only addressed me by my full name: Elara Smith.
Maybe what I went through made me a bit sensitive. I developed brain cancer before turning thirty.
Cancer seems to run in my family; my mother, aunt, and great-grandmother all died young from the disease.
Upon arriving at the office, Eve stopped me with a distant yet polite tone, "The general manager is in a meeting, please wait a moment.
"In an instant, it suddenly occurred to me that 'if' might be this 'Eve'.
Eve, a university classmate of Simon, became his secretary after they graduated.
She manages all his personal and professional matters.
They spend more time together each day than Simon and I do.
I am bothered by their past relationship during university.
Though brief, it remains a thorn in my side.
In our shared circles, I'm seen as petulant and possessive, forbidding any woman from getting close to him.
Even so, I dare not tell Simon that we should fire Eve.
I vividly remember how reluctant he was to end their relationship.
Simon looked very upset then.He looked at me coldly, his voice hoarse, asking, "Are you only capable of pressuring me with my parents' wishes?"
I even saw tears in his eyes.
Did he love her so much?
I was stunned for a long time.
He's usually reserved, and I had never seen him care so much about anyone.
Perhaps he called her 'if' to express his regret for letting her go.
Previously, I might have waited stubbornly until the meeting ended to meet Eve and to show her how intimate we are.
But this time, I handed the spare phone to Eve, instructed her to give it to Simon after the meeting and left.
Eve looked slightly surprised.
