Graham's transformation both surprised and confused me. He not only regained his composure and thoughtfulness but also seemed to prioritize me in every little thing, giving me a level of respect and care I had never experienced before.
Our friends couldn't resist teasing: “Seeing your photo back on Professor Huntington’s desk, the whole school is buzzing about how perfect you two are, it's like a real-life fairy tale.”
Yet, I felt an indescribable sense of desolation. “He’s... too distant with me, treating me like a polite guest. Only that one time when he had too much to drink...” “That’s his way of showing respect, don’t be too greedy. You’ll understand after the wedding.” My friends thought I was just experiencing pre-marital jitters and called to comfort me.
Towards the end of one call, my friend suddenly became more concerned: “Mimi, are you okay? I heard Professor Huntington took a special leave tonight, said he was heading to the hospital.”
I was momentarily stunned by the question, “Me? No, I’m fine.”
Graham had just told me he had to work late. He never takes leave lightly...
“His hurried look, I thought it was because of you.” My heart tightened.
Graham, the man who had devoted his life to research, never let personal matters interfere with work. I hastily searched for the hospital address someone had sent me, deciding to find out the truth myself.
It was the address I had discreetly obtained, concerning the hospital where Penelope's daughter was located—a young girl, struggling with illness, barely clinging to life through dialysis. Could Graham have discovered the existence of this child?
Recalling the day Graham first woke up, his mother hurriedly visited, whispering something privately to him. A long-missed smile of warmth and vitality spread across Graham’s face, a smile I hadn't seen in a long time. At that moment, he seemed to decide to let go of the past's shadows.
After his mother left, Graham suddenly gripped my hand, his eyes filled with promises of the future: “Melinda, let's start over.”
“I promise, no more accidents will happen, giving us a fresh start.”
