ETHAN CARTER
'Hello Karen, I don't suppose you know where your daughter and my son are, do you?"I asked watching her tremble a little bit before she placed the tray ok the coffee table in the living room.
'E-Ethan?" She called again and I wondered what was going on with her because she looked at me as if I were a ghost. As if I weren't supposed to be standing infront of her.
Vince walked to where Karen was whispering something in her ear and I stood there impatiently. She was about to say something to me when Jaxon came from where I o a stubborn Jaxon to where I stood.
He walked up to me barely smiling as if he would rather be somewhere else than here with me. He stretched out his hand begrudgingly towards me reaching for a handshake.
I knelt on the tiled floor taking his hand on mine,
'Hey champ. How are you doing? You are a big fan of basketball huh?" I asked looking at his t shirt but he still couldn't look me in the eye or talk to me.
'You are a man of few words too, I guess. I'm also a man of few words", I said awkwardly and Jaxon looked at me as if he couldn't wait for me to finish but I didn't give up.
'Do you like parties?" I asked and this time he nodded cheerfully.
'I bet you like cake too and ice cream. Lots of ice cream right?"
He nodded again.
'I have a party tomorrow for my daughter Elise. She'll be really happy to share her ice cream with you that is if you want to come", I said watching his smile reach his eyes as he turned around to look at Karen and Vince.
'Can I go, meemaw?" He asked and I smiled hearing his voice for the first time.
I wondered what he would call me. Dada? Naah, that was for little kids. What about dad? Or daddy like how Elise liked to call me?
'Sure that is if we are also invited",Karen looked at me anxiously and I wondered why she was interested in coming to Elise's party.
She hated me. I didn't think that after all these years she would be calm after seeing me. I broke her daughter's heart and she had every right to not want to see me.
'Ofcourse, the more the merrier. I'm sure Elise will be happy to make new friends", I said ruffling Jaxon's hair and for the first time he smiled at me. A warm genuine smile that made me feel good in the inside.
I stood up from the floor, holding Jaxon by his shoulders as I glanced over at Karen and Vince.
'Elise? That's her name?" Karen suddenly asked and I nodded.
'It's a beautiful name. Do you have a picture of her?"
Her question caught me off guard as she seemed far more interested in Elise than me being in her boyfriend's house.
I took out my phone from my pants, unlocking it and showing her Elise who was at my lock screen and home screen. Karen gasped covering her mouth lightly with her hand.
'She's so beautiful",she commented and I chuckled muttering a ‘thanks'.
She gave me back the phone looking at me and asking,
'Where's the venue for the party?"
And I explained to her that it would be in my mansion starting at exactly seven am. I was a bit concerned by how Karen seemed giddy listening to me rumble about Elise. It was almost as if she loved her before she even knew her.
Nevertheless I spent almost an hour listening to Jaxon introduce me to his action figures and they were quite a lot. I could say that he was starting to warm up to me now the only thing left was his mother.
Her stubborn mother. The most stubborn woman I had ever met.
'And Aliya? Is she around?" I asked.
'She's not here at the moment. But I do know where she is"
Ten minutes later I was driving south to one of the suburban streets I knew in San Francisco. Apparently Aliya had gone there to oversee the renovation of her new home. It gave me some hope that has wasn't going to take Jaxon away seeing as to how she was already planning on settling in.
I arrived there to find handymen going in and out of the house carrying timber and work tools like drills. Once I parked my car just by the road, I walked inside the house being careful not to trip over anything or disturb the work going on.
The interior of the house was covered by an extensive polythene to prevent any antiques from being damaged. It was a rather old house seeing that some of the walls had cracks and patches. I was about to ask one of the handy men if he had seen a redheaded woman in here when not far from where I stood I saw Aliya dressed in dirty overalls with a sledge hammer in her hands.
'This is for being a two faced liar!" she shouted smashing the cupboard just by the wall so hard that I cringed imagining that it would have been my head being smashed like an overripe papaya.
I never lied",I spoke from behind spooking her. She took off her glasses and her yellow helmet and the look on her face was one that said she did not want to deal with me at the moment.
She asked whether I was following her and I answered her honestly. I suppose all the hate in her eyes was because I had refused to be honest in the first place but after all these years of being away from each other I wanted to tell her everything.
It was amusing at first when she asked about Crystal. I could see the jealousy ooze from her body in volumes as she thought long and heard about me being married to Crystal. Had she not seen the news of my wedding with Crystal being cancelled?
When I told her about Landon and Crystal being married, the expression on her face was to die for. It was like she was questioning everything she knew.
'I'm not married, Aliya and to answer your question, Elise is adopted. Which leads me to my question. Are you going to listen to me or am I going to have to tie you to that chair to make you listen?"
I hoped she would choose the latter. I would have fun tying her up to a chair and getting the chance to kiss her.
