'I saw Aliya today"
'Or atleast I thought it was her"
Jai's statements kept haunting me now and then. What if it was her he saw, what then? Jai claimed he didn't have time to approach her because I called him but what if it was indeed Aliya?
What if my Aliya was back in the city? I certainly couldn't barge in her life like I owned her, that would only make me a bad guy in her eyes. She left because of me but what was she doing back here?
Even as I drove my car to my house, the thought of seeing her made me feel giddy and nervous and sick. Different emotions played in me so much that I couldn't focus on anything but her. But what if she was married? With kids?
I would be the only wrong thing in her life if I decided to win her back. Win her back? I even sounded crazy and delusional. Talking about someone that wasn't here and that was certainly not real.
Despite me knowing the fact that it couldn't have been Aliya, here I was driving around her old neighborhood, spying on her old apartment complex anxiously to see her. I stayed there for about an hour until I decided what I was doing was unhealthy for me and definitely not worth it.
If she was back well and good, I wished her all the best but I had a little girl back home waiting for me, expecting me to be home for dinner.
I turned my car around, skidding down the road my destination being home.
'Daddy!" Elise came running to me the minute I opened the door.
'Hey princess", I scooped her up in my arms carrying her into the living room.
'What did you do today?" I asked placing my blazer and my briefcase on the couch.
'Coloring. I colored a mermaid",she cheered and I raised a brow.
Weren't they still coloring yesterday and the day before?
'I thought you did that yesterday", I questioned.
'No… yesterday we were coloring the pigs and today mermaids",she scolded and I put her down in defeat.
'My bad"
'It's a good thing you came, she didn't want to have dinner without you",Mila came carrying a tray of food and I watched as Elise climbed the couch seating beside me, prepared to dine with me.
'That's why I rushed home, I know how stubborn she is", I said pulling back her hair so that it wouldn't get in the way of her food.
'Did we have anyone visit today?" I asked though really I was stupid to think that Aliya would come to visit.
This would be the last place she would set her foot in. She despised me but certainly she didn't despise Mila so I just thought, that maybe…just maybe she would want to come visit Mila.
'Apart from your mom, no one interesting passed by. Why? Are we supposed to expect visitors this week?" She asked curiously and I dismissed her with a no.
'Did she ask about me or was she here for Elise?" I asked taking a bite of my food as I watched Elise chomp on her tater tots.
'You know very wells she visits for Elise. Everyone visits for Elise. She is just something, isn't she?" Mila cooed and I had to agree, Elise was like the calm after a hurricane, the light at the end of the horizon.
She had a way of making things better and I knew how excited my mother was everytime she heard her call her ‘grandma'. And Crystal…ooh Crystal couldn't get enough of Elise because Elise made her feel younger and loved. Truth be told, I never thought Crystal was the type to like children but after her father got put behind bars, she changed a lot.
I had a feeling her father didn't let her be whatever she wanted because now she seemed happy with her husband Landon ofcourse. I believe they were in their third honeymoon in Fiji? No doubt making Elise some friends.
'Yeah she certainly is. The cutest infact", I said heartily eating my dinner silently.
By nine pm, Mila was already asleep and I understand why given the fact that she had been taking care of Elise since she got out of school at four pm. I think it was high time I got new maids because let's be honest, Mila wasn't exactly aging backwards.
After dinner, I took the dishes to the sink washing them as Elise dried them with a cloth. We always did that after supper with her using a stepping stool to step on while she dried the plates.
I could attest that she had broken more plates than I had in my life but hey? Practice made perfect.
'Like this daddy?"
'Yes just like that and if you break one this time, I'm telling you Elise you'll be driving to the supermarket alone to get another plate", I warned watching her huff before carefully placing the plates on the counter.
'I'll not break one"
'You said that last time until you started assuming that the plate was a frisbee", I reminded her, washing the last plate and handing it to her.
She dried it giving me a smirk that held the expression of ‘I told you so'. After discarding the water down the sink, I got her off the high stool taking her hand in mine as we climbed the stairs heading to her room.
'Can you stay? Just for today",she asked the instant I tucked her in.
'Sure princess but why? What's going on? Did something happen at school?" I asked shifting my weight on her bed.
She fumbled with Cubby's hand before saying,
'Some kids were making fun of me today. That I'm ugly and that's why mommy left. Is—daddy—is that true?"
And her eyes fell on mine. I felt pissed that there were still mean kids on school. I took her to that school because I thought they were disciplined and clearly they weren't.
'Do you think it's true? Elise you are the most beautiful and kindest girl I know, those kids said that because they are jealous", I explained.
'Jealous? Of me?"
'Yes of you. You have what they don't have"
'What?"
'A big family that loves you. I love you. Mila loves you. Grandma loves you. Aunty Crystal and Uncle Landon loves you. Even Cubby loves you. Not everyone has that"
Her eyes glistened with happiness before she scooted to me hugging me,
'I love you too daddy"
