ETHAN CARTER
I dropped Elise off at school trying very hard to escape her teacher who sort of had a crush on me. Ms Bitters was a nice woman but she was just so…extra and dramatic and I hated drama.
She would call me at work sometimes telling about Elise's day even when I hadn't asked her to. It was nice at first until she started calling me day in, day out asking if I was free or not.
I figured that if I was going to marry or look for potential mothers for Elise, I wanted someone who wasn't hang up on me but someone who loved Elise more. For Ms Bitters however, she was more interested in me than she was about Elise and I get it, I was the San Francisco's most eligible bachelor as the magazines said.
Every woman wanted to be with me, to be called a Carter but I didn't want a woman interested in how I looked or how handsome the magazines said I was or because of my money. I wanted someone to love me for me and my daughter equally.
Once I parked the car across the street, opening the door for Elise, I took out her lunch bag giving it to her before she forgot it again. She had a habit of forgetting a lunch bag something I couldn't quite figure out whether it was intentional or accidental.
Everytime Mila decided to go Vegan for a week, Elise would make excuses not to eat supper because she was never a big fan of broccoli and neither was I.
'Hey hey, come here", I called her kneeling on the concrete floor as I slung the lunch bag on her shoulder.
'I'm going to be late daddy",she complained.
'I haven't heard the bell ring yet. Remember to be good and what did we say about lunch"
'That I eat all my lunch even though there's broccoli in it so that I can become as tall and as strong as daddy",she chanted playing with her pigtails.
'Good girl now give daddy a kiss before you run off", I said feeling her little arms around my neck before she ran off joining her friends.
I remember how I was the first time I took her to Kindergarten, I had tried being strong but it was hard seeing her grow up. What about when she joined college?
Damn, I would rather built a college next to our house to prevent her from leaving. I watched as she entered the building looking back and waving at me before she finally disappeared.
.
I was in the middle of waving at no one in particular when I saw Ms Bitters rushing over to me in a hurry. I turned around going to my car and closing the door while I inserted the key only for it to fall to the ground of my car.
'Shit!" I cussed looking for the keys and when I found them, I turned to the window watching a grinning Ms Bitters stare at me. She indicated with her fingers for me to roll the window down and I pressed the button frustrated that I would have to deal with her…yet again.
'Ms Bitters", I greeted.
'Ooh please Ethan. You can call me Cherry, Miss Bitters sound a bit old, don't you think?" She flirted and yes just incase you were wondering she was actually called Cherry Bitters. A rather unfortunate name to give your child if I dared to say.
The fact that she had called me Ethan made it seem as if we were buddies when we actually weren't.
'I insist on calling you Miss Bitters, it's only ethical seeing that you are my child's teacher", I muttered hoping that it would be the end of our conversation.
'Okay. I wanted to talk about Elise",she started like she always did.
'What about Elise?" I asked.
'I've already got a class but if you are free anytime of the day, I would be glad to talk",she smiled and I forced a smile.
'Sure why not. I've got a meeting to run to but I'll call you when I can", I lied.
'Why don't you leave me your new phone number and I'll call",she insisted and I mentally groaned.
Damn, she was so stubborn.
'It's only gentleman-ly for me to call first. Don't worry, Ms Bitters I already got your number in my phone incase of emergencies"
Her eyes lit up in expectation,
'You do? Well I thought you discarded my number when you got a new number"
How she had known I had a new number, I didn't know. Maybe she had tried calling me and failed to reached me.
'Please…you are Elise's favorite teacher how could I do that?"
And that seemed to work because she blushed hard moving away from my car and waving at me goodbye and that she would be waiting for my call any time of the day.
I didn't have her number and even if I did the last thing I would was call her. Elise certainly didn't like her and I didn't either.
I arrived at Mecha Builders a little later than I anticipated for a meeting with the Filipino investors. I was in a rush to get to my office and when I stopped by Nina's work place to see her, I was a little taken back.
'What are you doing back here, Nina?" I asked watching her struggle to stand due to her enormous belly.
She was so stubborn, this was the second time she was back here right after I had given her a maternity leave.
'Please, Sir. I have to do something. You need me here, I can't just say cooped up in the house all day",she complained and I offered her my hand so that she could sit down.
'What I need you to do is rest. Does Jai even know you are here?" I asked and she nodded in defeat telling me not to call him.
Jai and Nina were the most chaotic couple, I had ever seen. But they did love each other something that was initiates by a one night stand and a baby bump. The baby in her womb had initiated their love and although I never saw that coming, I was happy for her and him.
Can't believe I was going to be the godfather to their son. I called Jai immediately telling him that his soon to be wife was working against his orders.
The meeting with the Filipino investors was short and when the meeting adjourned, I went back to find Jai already scolding Nina.
'Hey man", I greeted.
'I'm so sorry about this. I'll take her home immediately",he said shooting a glare at Nina.
'It's alright. It's always good to see my secretary once in a while", I joked.
'Wait. There's something I think you should know",he stopped me in my tracks and I turned around to hear what he had to say.
The expression on his face kind of told me I wouldn't like what I was about to hear.
'I saw Aliya today"
