'And the prince and the princess lived happily ever after", I finished closing the colorful book in a huff.
Whoever wrote this kids book should have rethought writing about witches or ogres. Elise had been scared everytime I mentioned an ogre or everytime I opened a page with a funny looking cartoon eating a little lamb.
'What about the witch, daddy?" Elise asked looking up to me and I wondered what to say.
In the book the prince cuts the witch's head but wouldn't telling her that spook her to death or give her nightmares.
'She uh-she went to prison, baby", I said hoping she would ask anymore questions because I would only end up being tongue tied.
'And lived happily ever after too?" She asked clutching her big brown teddy bear.
'Yes and she lived happily ever after", I commented getting up on the bed to get the blanket which was at the edge.
'Did she find a prince too?" She continued and I sighed smiling a bit at how my five year old daughter never let a matter rest not when it was bugging her.
She also was the innocent thing I had ever come across. She always wanted everyone to be happy and saw the good in everyone too.
'Yes she found a prince, they got married and they had children, the end", I said pulling the blankets to cover her and her teddy bear that she never left alone.
I was starting to rethink the whole buying her a huge teddy bear thing. She had been so accustomed to it so much that everywhere she went she wanted Cubby, her bear with her. When she took a bath, she wanted Cubby to take a bath also.
When I bought her ice cream, she wanted Cubby to be bought ice cream too. And when she went bed, she shared her little bed with the big brown bear.
I had offered to hide once upon time but Crystal and Mila were quick to advise me if I got rid of it, she would hate me forever. And the last thing I wanted was her to hate me.
She was my reason to keep going, my joy, my daughter and my heart. Adopted or not she was still my daughter and no one would tell me otherwise.
She came to me at a stage where I thought I would never be happy or deserve happiness. Six years ago when Julian got arrested, something I hadn't seen coming, I broke things off with Crystal and told her everything.
Ofcourse she was still shocked by everything her father had done but she understood that I didn't love and that our relationship would never work. And when everything was done over with, I had gone back to Aliya's place to explain everything but…
She was gone.
There was no one in her apartment and certainly no trace of her. It was like she had vanished into thin air in mere seconds.
I tried looking for her but she was out of trace. After weeks of searching, I came into contact with Ray and even though I didn't like him, I begged him to tell me where she went and even he himself didn't know where she had gone.
I was hesitant to believe him at first but the look of melancholy on his face told me that he too had no idea where Aliya and her mother had disappeared to. I contacted Vince but he was of no use to me either.
She left because of me. To forget about me and at that time I felt like the unluckiest man in the world having had lost the love of my life. I resorted to drinking, technically drowning my sorrows in a bottle of whiskey.
One year and a half later, I recall I was just from work going back to my house to get my wallet so that I could hit a nightclub later in the evening and get drunk.
I had just been a few inches away from my gate when I saw a woman with a shawl on her face dropping something like a basket outside my gate. Being the rational man that I was, I called out to her stopping my car and yelling at my guards to come outside.
The woman had already run the opposite direction and I watched as the guards chased after her. I walked stealthily to where the basket was watching my step incase it was a bomb about to detonate upon touching.
When I looked inside the basket and a pair of the most blue eyes I had ever seen gazed at me, I was too dazed to speak. It was a baby? Someone had left a baby at my gate.
And when I took her into my arms back then hell I knew that she was my angel, my light at the end of the tunnel and that I would protect her come what may.
We searched for her parents ofcourse but when there were no missing reports about her, I adopted her and named her Elise. Because just like her name, she was beautiful.
Sometimes I forgot that we weren't related but I dare say she looked like me some times and other times she reminded of…Aliya.
'Goodnight, daddy",she said and I towered over her giving a peck on her forehead.
'Goodnight, princess and hey you have school tomorrow so don't stay up to late talking to Cubby", I warned switching the lights off.
'I won't",she said giddily and I knew she was lying.
I closed the door standing just outside to wait if she would say anything or get out of bed. Just like I thought, I heard her shuffling her legs from bed.
'Dear God,
Nana Mila said you make dreams come true for those who are good. I've been a good child you can ask Santa or daddy. I'm here to pray not for myself even though I do want new toys but I'm praying for daddy. Please let him find a mom soon so that he can be happy like Aunty Crystal and Uncle Landon…pleaasee. Amen"
And I heard her go back to bed. I was not suppose to listen to that but I found myself tearing up after listening to that.
Looking at it now, maybe it was time I found a girlfriend or someone to fill the void of being a mother to Elise.
I knew Elise liked Crystal as mother but Crystal was already married to Landon and pretty soon they would have kids, where would that leave Elise?
I needed to find her a mother, someone to love her just as much as I did.
