ETHAN CARTER
I sipped the vodka into my mouth loving the bitterness that came along with it.
On a lighter note, yesterday had gone horribly wrong. To start with, Julian Perez had threatened me.
Not that he hadn't threatened me before. The last time he threatened me was when he told me that his daughter liked me and that I should start dating her. It was more of an order than a request.
Ofcourse I declined the suggestion. I was Ethan Carter, the guy who never settled for one girl. I wanted freedom, to enjoy my youth. What I didn't know was that Julian Perez never took a no for an answer.
A week later after I had refused to date his daughter, one of my company vans had an accident. Two people died on the spot and to this day I still felt guilty about it. The police report said that the brakes failed but that wasn't true.
All the Mecha Builders vans were always checked before they even left the company. When I received a call from Julian the next day after the accident telling me that that was only a message and that the next time he would come for my head next, I had no choice.
Julian Perez was a dangerous man. He was powerful and going to the police to report him would jeopardize my mother's life. I couldn't risk that, I made this mess and I was going to deal with it.
He was right in one thing, though. I couldn't be where I was today without his money. He made me who I was today and even though I had more money than I could count, I was indebted to him for eternity.
'How did the talk with dad go?", Crystal had asked me and I had stared at Julian and Luke hard contemplating whether it was time to tell Crystal how villainy her dad was.
'Fine. It was fine. I didn't know he was going to be here", I had lied sipping the ridiculous cocktail that Brenda offered me.
'Well Luke is going back to Singapore. Think of this as his farewell party",she gushed.
'Ooh. Seems my invitation got lost in the mail", I bellowed sarcastically watching her smile fade.
'I didn't think you would want to come after- after the fight", she started.
'Is that why you've been avoiding me?"
'Ethan you literally left me for her the other day right after you had assured me that nothing was going on between you two"
'She was drowning come on I had to save her", I explained.
'She was not drowning Ethan you and I both saw her standing in the pool"
Though it was true in a way. I only rushed to save Aliya because she had a broken leg the day before. I doubted she would be able to walk to the edge of the pool so I helped.
'Okay, maybe you are right", I huffed realizing I should have framed that better,"you are right about the drowning part but I don't want to fight Crystal. Am tired of fighting"
'I don't like fighting either Ethan but I just don't trust that woman. I can see it in the way she looks at you, she likes you"
I didn't want to talk further about Aliya because at the moment I didn't know what to believe and what not to. Maybe Crystal was right, maybe she liked me, maybe that was the reason she kissed me.
Or maybe we were all overthinking things and imagining things that weren't there to begin with.
'If it makes you feel better. I will not go near her, I will not talk to her and I will not even glance in her direction", I joked.
'Promise? Am serious Ethan. Promise me"
'Fine. Fine, I promise"
I knew bumping into Aliya around the house was unavoidable but if saying yes and making Crystal happy was what it took to ensure Julian didn't hurt anyone I cared about, then I would gladly do it.
Later, Luke, Crystal's brother approached me. We didn't talk much instead he kept on repeating of how I should take care of his sister and how if I didn't do that, he would break my bones. The same old shit.
Luke Perez, was a chip off the old block. He was like Julian Perez in terms of physical attributes and traits. Just like Julian he had ash blonde hair, a six foot frame, a scowl on his face that never seemed to leave his face and he was a people's pleaser.
I had a gut feeling that the main reason why he disliked me was because he thought that his dad liked me more than he did with him. It was always the same story really, sons always wanted to be number one in their father's eyes and let's just say for Luke he hadn't accomplished that with his father.
My eyes riveted back to the present. I chugged the last of my drink, standing up and going to the window after I heard the sound of a car pulling up in the driveway.
It was almost eight pm and I wondered who it might have been. Mila was in the house and as far as Jai was concerned, I thought he went to see his brother miles from here.
I pulled the curtain to side, my eyes narrowing into slits at the red Honda coming to a halt.
Someone opened the driver's seat and I watched as someone hopped off. I knew the guy. I had seen him from somewhere.
He went around the car to open the passenger's seat and a grinning Aliya hopped off taking his hand.
Ofcourse!
Aliya's boyfriend!
She took her bags from the back seat and for a few minutes they talked. I could see love ooze from both of them especially the way the guy eyed Aliya like she was a piece of meat to be devoured.
Aliya on the other hand, gushed as if her boyfriend was one funny Kevin Hart. I watched more intently, seeing them get close, seeing their bodies get closer and some queer feeling overrode my feelings.
'Don't kiss him!" I mumbled even though they couldn't hear me from where I was standing.
As if my words meant nothing, her boyfriend bridged the gap taking her by the waist and kissing Aliya.
I shut the curtains so fast feeling anger ripple through me.
