It was a dream, a nightmare. The whole thing was really a dream even though it didn't seem like it. I never knew dreams could look so real like that, and when I woke up I couldn't stop panting. My whole body was damp due to sweat, and just as I looked around the bed imagining the amount of sweat my body released, my phone began ringing. Surprisingly, it was in my hand. I held it so tight, the same way I saw myself holding it in the dream. I didn't even have the time to check the caller ID properly, I just answered the call.
"Laura, where are you? Are you in your room? Please go and check those kids, one of them us crying!" It was Aunt Vicky, and as soon as she said that she terminated the call. Just then, I decided to check on the kids, I didn't know what was going on but I guess they were missing their mom. I checked the time and realized it was almost six. I sluggishly headed downstairs to check the kids only to find the door opened and none of them around.
"Patrick, Paul!" I looked around but couldn't find any of them, hence I decided to run out and see if they had gone out to play or returned back to their house. Or maybe someone came to take them, but who would do that? A neighbor? Well, I didn't think so. If Their mother had trusted any order neighbor more than us, she would have taken them to the person. Fortunately for me, when I went out to look for them I found them sitting on a bench in front of their house... looking so lonely. They were obviously missing their mother. Poor kids. I stared at them pathetically.
As soon as I began walking over to them where they were, I saw me and withdrew to their feet. But none of them cared to walkover to me. Thus, I continued walking over to them until I arrived at the spot where they stood. Just then I kneeled to practically match with their heights and then smiled at them, however none of them return the smile. They kept looking at me with fear written allover their faces. I didn't know why they were scared but it was obvious they thought I was going to punish them for going out without my permission.
But I wasn't that kind of a person, besides I was deeply asleep when they left. For that reason, I might not have heard them when they were wailing and yearning to return back to their own house probably because they might have woken up and found the sitting room empty with only them around. Anyways, that's not a problem. They were new after all, I should expect something like that from them the fact that they were just kids. I thought to myself as I placed my hands on their respective shoulders.
"You guys are already missing your mom, huh?" I asked with a wrinkled brow, and the two nodded their heads. Then I gulped and told them not to worry, that she would soon be back. Then I asked them if they needed to carry anything from their house so we could go to our house and wait for their mom there. Hearing that, they both nodded their heads now looking lively. I was very happy to notice that, hence I told them to wait for me here while I go back home and get the keys to their house from my aunt. They two then nodded their heads in acknowledgement.
Thence, I told them to stay safe and to not talk to any passerby. I also warned them not to leave where they were. I did all that because I was scared what they might do, I mean if they could leave our house then they could possibly leave the place I saw them too, but were they used to going around the streets? Why would they leave the spot, and to where exactly? Well, I didn't really think so but I didn't used to see them roaming around. They were always around their house when at home.
I stood and gently began heading back to Aunt Vicky's house, while hoping they stay put before I return. When I arrived at the house, I walked in and went straight to Aunt Vicky's room. There, I found her managing her legs to walk to the bathroom. Thus, I told her what happened and then helped her into the bathroom. "What, they went out by themselves back to their house?" she was surprised to hear about it, "God, those poor kids!" she lamented as she shook her head negatively looking sad, obviously sympathizing with the whole situation.
Actually, I was also sympathetic towards them. At this moment, they were supposed to be with their parents, but sadly their parents had made a great mistake that was now affecting them. If only their parents had made the right decision before, it would have been better and the kids wouldn't have found themselves in such a pathetic situation. "I talked to them, they said they would like to get some of their things from their home, probably their toys and other things to play with" I apprised her.
That wasn't exactly what they told me they would want to get but I told her that because I believed those were the things children of their age would like to use in order to keep themselves happy and lively, hence I told her that. And after hearing that, she gave me a go ahead and told me where she kept the key to their house. "The key is in the drawer, once you are done please return it back. And don't stay long please, you know the kinds of neighbors we have around, nosy neighbors. They may end up telling Rita a different story when she comes back" she warned.
"Okay, aunt" I said and then left her in the bathroom, she wanted to answer the call of nature... the kind that only her could stand the smell and could take some time for her to round up. You know exactly what I am talking about, defection of course. After leaving her in the bathroom, I headed to where she kept the key which was inside her drawer. Thus, I left the house and headed straight to Patrick and Paul outside while hoping they heed my advice and stayed where I told them to.
Fortunately for me, they were still there. They had returned back to the bench and were waiting for me calmly. To say I was glad is an understatement, I heaved a sigh of relief and wore a smile while heading towards them. They were really good kids, although I was panicked when I couldn't find them earlier. Anyways, nobody is perfect. Even though they were good kids, they were naive. And that makes them imperfect. But all in all, they were really good kids and obedient and I liked them for that. But despite that, I would be glad if their mom return back soon. I thought to myself.
The moment they saw me walking back to them, they withdrew from the bench and stood on their feet. And just as I arrived, I asked if anybody had approach them or if they had talk to anybody... to which they responded negatively to the two questions, which neans nobody approached them and they didn't takk to anybody. That was good, although the street looked somewhat empty. Only few people could be seen walking around. Was it because someone was murdered in the night? I wondered.
Hence, I stood and walked over to the door and inserted the key into the lock. After that, I unlocked the door and pulled it open. Then I waited for them to enter into the house before entering myself. They were so happy to be back into their house as they began running around the room and looking for things. Paul went to the kitchen, took a pack of cornflakes and then a bottle of milk from the refrigerator. He brought them to the living room where I stood and then placed them on the table.
That was shocking, I never really knew he was hungry. He should have just tell me, we have practically everything they need to fill their bellies. I looked at him in total dismay as he returned back to the kitchen I got a small bowl and two spoons, then he called on his brother that everything was ready. Paul then answered from where he was, which was upstairs. And just as he returned, I saw him holding a sketch pad with some colors in his hands. He dropped them on the table too.
And just as I thought that was it, Patrick reminded him about a gadget which I thought was a remote vehicle but turned out to be a new generation Pad which I guess cost about three hundred bucks. I had seen its ads on the internet several times before, it had a ten point five inch display, four gigabytes of random access memory, and two hundred and fifty six gigabytes or read only memory. The battery capacity was eight thousand five hundred milli-amp per hour, which was twice as strong as my phone battery capacity.
When everything was set, I helped the carry the things out but not after telling Patrick to return the bowl and spoons he took. There was no need for that, after all we had them at home. However, I didn't tell him to return them milk and cornflakes. The milk remaining in our refrigerator isn't much, and Jessica might need it later. And about cornflakes, well the last time I checked it wasn't much. I doubt if it would be enough for the two of them.
As soon as we left the house, we headed back to Aunt Vicky's house with all eyes on us. Actually, the few people around kept looking at us while we head back. They must have been thinking, what exactly is happening. Rita and John's children migrating to another house? Well, whatever was it they were thinking it is up to them. Even if the kids' more returned and heard a different story, I would explain everything to her and use her children as my witness.
On arriving into our house, I helped the children settled down in the sitting room before heading to the kitchen to bring a bowl for them and spoons to eat their cornflakes with. I also helped them in mixing the cornflakes with milk. When I was done, I dragged the center table close to the couch where they sat in and told them to enjoy their food while I head upstairs to my aunt.
"Okay" Patrick said while Paul was busy eating, he seemed hungry... the way he was eating, he would think he hadn't eaten in many days. Meanwhile, they ate macaroni not long ago. What kind of stomach do they really have, the type that never get tired of storing food? I jokingly thought as I scattered to the stairway and began walking upstairs in a gentle manner.
Hence, I went straight to Aunt Vicky's room. "So fast" she said, even though to me it wasn't really that fast. I had to wait for the kids to go around and get the things they wanted, you know, although I wasn't keeping my eyes on the time. But something told me she was only complementing my efforts, that was why she said that. Anyways, whatever the case was, I didn't really care much. I was only doing my best as the kind of person I was. "Thank you" she beamed at me the moment I returned the key back to her, she was really happy. I could see it boldly written on her face, and that made me beame back as well.
