Yesterday in the evening I had a conversation with Jessica about Fred. The conversation didn't end well, I didn't up storming out of her room with my eyes filled with tears.
She was so heartless, she didn't care about Fred's death at all. I was beginning to wonder if really she was innocent of what the police were accusing her and her friends of doing.
When I went to my room, I sat on my bed thinking about the conversation we had and everything. I had never seen an selfish person like Jessica, she was so self-centered to the extent all she cherished was herself.
She talked about leaving home when Aunt Vicky scolded her yesterday, that means she could even leave her mom. She obviously didn't care about her mother, she wouldn't care about her father either if he were to be alive.
My sleep yesterday was half, and in the morning I prepared for work as early as possible and left home without even taking breakfast. I lied to Aunt Vicky that I had some papers to sign that instant and she fell for it.
One thing I loved about her was how she believed in me, I could lie through my teeth and she would still believe me. She believed me more than she believed her daughter, Jessica.
If I was Jessica, I would be ashamed of myself. I would try my best adjust and make it up with the people I hurt. I would also try as much as I could to become a good samaritan. But the Jessica I knew wouldn't do that.
While waiting for a cab to pass by, I decided to call Shirley and ask how she's coping. However when I tried to call her, her phone was off. The battery was probably down or she deliberately activated flight mode in order to have a good night sleep.
I kept waiting for a cab until the internet service was restored. Actually, it was down earlier. Thus, I launched into Go Travel app and booked for a cab, tagging my location along. And in just few minutes, a cab arrived.
I hopped in and as usual, the cabman like all other cabmen working with Go Travel introduced himself to me using codes, 467. However, he wasn't a talkative. Throughout the drive he was quiet. And when we arrived at our destination, I gave him a five star rating. He actually deserved it.
"Good morning, mam" The security guards greeted me. Again, someone was calling me Mam.
"Morning, but it's Miss please. Against next time" I corrected them.
"Oh," they glanced at each other, "okay Miss" they tried to hold their smile.
"Good!" I muttered and headed straight to the storey building.
While walking towards the elevator, I oversaw Mike discussing with Stephanie and a strange guy in armani suit. As soon as Stephanie saw me, she alerted the suit guy and pointed at me with a glare.
What were they talking about, and by the way I thought Stephanie resigned yesterday. I lowered my gaze as I walked past them without even uttering a word to them.
I didn't need to say anything to them, after all I didn't owe them anything. Plus I couldn't stand Stephanie's glare. Whatever they were discussing, I knew it had to be about yesterday's event. She was replaced by me and she quitted the job.
Just as I stepped into the elevator and pressed the number of my floor, the Stephanie quickly walked over and stepped into the elevator too. The rest, however stayed behind and watched from where they stood.
As scared as I was, I geared up about stepping out of the elevator when Stephanie held me back until the elevator shuts its door off. Like seriously? I turned aggressive and shoved her hand away,
"Get your hands off me!" I exclaimed and watched as she laughed scornfully at me. She was obviously sick in the head, why would she stop me from going out when I had the right to do so, anytime... any day?
"Look at her, as naive as she is" she said looking at me disdainfully. "You think I am going to hurt you?" she smirked at me, "Why will I do that?" she continued, "Of course I am hurt by what happened, but I can't hurt you. At least not now"
What did she meant by her words, not now? Does that mean she would take action on me in the future for a problem she caused herself? If she had been a good assistant to Mike, and a good leader to her subordinates, the story would have been different.
I guess Frank's intels had been feeding him stories about her, that was why he decided to replace her with me. For that reason, she should blame no one but herself. She caused it for herself and I would make sure I tell Frank exactly what she said, that she would hurt me some day.
"Don't you have a mouth to talk?" she yelled at me, "You are staring at me as if you are deaf. I can force you to talk, you know that right? Now apologize for what you did!" she commanded.
"Apologize for what exactly? What did I do? I did nothing, Stephanie!" I yelled back at her trying to defend myself. Of course I did nothing, she should be the one to apologize for defaming me in the presence of all the staff in our department.
"Did you just say you did nothing? After snatching away my chair and forcing me to quit my job?" she said through her gritted teeth.
"I didn't snatch your chair from you, infact I never knew you before. Yesterday was my first time being here, I thought I was going to be offered a normal position but Frank had a better plan for me. It came as a surprise to me too. As for the job loss, you decided to quit by yourself. Nobody forced you to, or did anybody told you to leave? I can't remember hearing anybody chasing you away, Stephanie!" I said panting like someone that just finished a long race.
Just as she opened her mouth about to talk, the elevator opened and I quickly stepped out. "Hey you, we haven't finished talking and you are walking away?" she said while trailing behind me, "I am talking to you, bitch, stop there before I grab you by the hair and pull you to the wall!" she yelled at me. However, I didn't stop until I was finally in the work center.
I paused and looked back at her as she walked gently in shame while trying to plaster a smile on her face. The few staff that came early however were surprised to see her, they stared at her for a moment before returning back to work. Thus I headed into my office and watched through the glasses as she headed for the direction of Mike's office.
She probably came for something the fact that she wasn't a staff anymore for her to come for work. Thank God I escaped her craziness, I was lucky she didn't pull me by the hair if not, she would have probably wounded me.
I turned on my system and then logged into my account on the company's server. I had to check my password from where I wrote it yesterday though, the fact that I couldn't type it offhand.
Thus, I navigated to the history of some of the recent payments made and then printed them out through the printer. After printing them out, I signed where I was supposed to sign and then put the papers in a file and kept them on one side of the table.
Suddenly, I oversaw Stephanie leaving Mike's office with a box in her hand. She turned towards the direction of my office and then pointed out a middle finger at me before with an evil smile before leaving.
Finally, I heaved a sigh of relief and then relaxed on my chair. Just then someone walked into my office, "Hello Mam, good morning" said Jennifer while holding some files in her arms.
Mam, huh? I guess I should start getting used being called Madam, at least at work. By the way it wasn't as if I was being downgraded or something, it was a sign of respect.
"Hi, morning, what do you have there?" I curiously asked.
"It's some of the undone work by the former assistant head of this department, Stephanie. Mike told me to hand them over to you earlier before going out" she said, looking somehow awkward.
The files were kind of many, you know. If I was going to sign them all today, it would take me quite some time to finish. Anyways, why was I employed? To work, right? Yes, to work. I wasn't employed to play or relax.
"Okay, no problem. Bring them over here!" I said gesturing to her to keep them on the table.
"Alright, mam" she said as she did exactly as told. She drop them and left while I began going through the files. They were old transactions, dating back few weeks ago. Long before I even met Frank or knew about the company. I was surprised to see the papers unsigned.
Shit! I muttered a curse and heaved a sigh before commencing my signatory. While doing that, my phone buzzed and quickly began ringing. Upon checking the caller identification I realized it was Frank. Perhaps he has arrived also, I thought to myself.
"Hello," I said the moment I picked the call, "good morning"
"Morning, Laura. How are you?" he said.
"I am fine, and you?" I uttered.
"Same here," he said and I could hear someone's voice on the background, a familiar voice asking if he had reached out to me on phone, "Yes, I think she's at work already" he replied to the person, "I should be heading there too now" he added, "No thank you, Mam, I am not hungry. I took breakfast before coming..."
Judging from his words, he was probably at our house. I quickly chimed into the conversation, "Frank, where are you now and who are you talking to? Is it Aunt Vicky" I bespoke, however he ignored me.
"Thank you, Mam, I really appreciate it. I should be going now" he said referring to, probably Aunt Vicky. Just then I heard Jessica's voice clearly, "Hey, wait for me. Let me escort you to your car!" she said and he agreed to that, "Okay, sure" he said and before I knew it he ended the call. Just like that, he ended the call without even bothering to respond to me or say something before ending the call.
To be honest, I wasn't happy. And why would he even go to our house without calling me first to see if I was at home? I believe he was just trying to help but also, he should have done the right thing. When you want to visit someone, you call them first.
I also disliked the fact that Jessica was trying all her best to be open to Frank, what part of the MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS didn't she get from her Aunt Vicky's advice yesterday? I was already beginning to hate, seriously.
I kept the papers I was signing aside and waited patiently for Frank's arrival, I believed he would definitely come to my office before going to his. I would make sure I express how unhappy I was with him, he did something that provoked my peace of mind.
As I sat sadly, waiting for his arrival Mike bounced into my office and asked if Jennifer delivered his message to me. "Yes she did," I muttered in response, "they are here" I pointed at the files.
"Okay, so, are you done signing them because we would be having a board meeting tomorrow" he apprised me.
"Board meeting?" I was surprised, what was it all about? I wondered.
"Yes, board meeting. We normally used to have a meeting with some of the board of directors and key staff members of the company. Every department ought to layout their reports for the month, so, please make sure you sign those papers before tomorrow" he said about going when I halted him,
"But sir, what... whay if I didn't finish before tomorrow?" I asked out of curiosity. Like I said earlier, the papers were many.
"Then you will have yourself to blame!" he said and left.
