The mainland bridge was the one connecting Mainland with Cornfield. We weren't supposed to be there since the walkthrough was only around Cornfield, but Jessica and her friends had their plans.
"We are going to Mainland to get some of our friends here for the festival" she apprised me.
"Is that proper? What if..."
"Laura please, nothing is gonna happen okay? Now can we go?" she asked looking straight into my eyes.
"Okay, fine," I shrugged, "let's go!"
"Good" she gestured to me to follow them.
Just as we crossed the bridge, she made a call to someone and told him we were on our way already. "Okay Fred, see you soon" she ended the call. "Kate isn't coming", she told her friends.
"What?" They blurted.
"Yeah, she's traveling with Kingsley" Jessica said.
"That guy, he's so gonna ruin her!" Shirley muttered.
"Hey, what's up with the curse?" Jessica asked.
"Kingsley is a bad guy, you know that Jessica!" Shirley replied.
"Sure he is, or have you forgotten about his ex... how he used and dumped her?" Suzanna said to Jessica.
"I haven't, but trust me when I say he's changed. He'd been with Kate for some time now and things are moving just fine, or have you ever heard Kate complaining?" Jessica said.
"Why would she?" Shirley scoffed, "Of course she won't, especially when she's blindly in love!"
"Don't tell me you like that guy too?" Suzanna teased Jessica, "Should I tell Mike you are in love with Kings..."
"Bullshit!" Jessica threw a punch at Suzanna before she could even complete her words, "You guys are crazy" she said to them while I joined them to laugh. They were really funny.
I could remember my life at Marina College, how Naomi would pull a prank on me or crack jokes to make me laugh.
I could remember trying to hook me up with some random guys, or join me in group chat with some of our colleagues...
All that memories, whenever I remember I would sigh and smile. I never knew a time would come that I would miss all that.
"Laura? Are you okay?" Jessica pulled me out of my trance.
"Oh, yeah!" I blurted, "I mean, sure!"
"Okay, keep up please... we don't wanna lose you again" she said.
"Hmm, you won't" I assured her.
Just then, a van came and pulled over close to us... almost hitting Shirley. "Fred, are you nuts?" Shirley yelled at him.
He ignored her. "Hello guys" he alighted the car.
"I am talking to you!" she threw friendly punches at him.
"Easy, baby" he giggled and held her hands.
"Who's this?" I asked Jessica in a low tone.
"Fred? He's the guy I called earlier, he's taking us to the Mainland. Any problem?"
"No, I was just asking" I shook my head.
"Okay" she turned over to Shirley and Fred, "Are you guys done?" she asked.
"Done? This two? You know how they act when they are together, cat and mouse" Suzzanna smirked.
"Bullshit, stop please!" Jessica separated the two, "It's okay, we have to go and get Vivian and Jack. Kate won't be coming with us, which we all know, therefore we won't have to go far into Mainland to get her"
"Yeah, so let's get into the van... shall we?" Suzanna said.
"Oh, yes!" Fred said, "But Jessica you are staying in the front with me. By the way, who's this?" he said referring to me.
"She's my cousin" Jessica responded, "And about staying in the front with you, that's not happening. Shirley will, while I stay in the back with my sister and Suzanna..."
"What? Are you serious? Come on, you know I can't sit with this brute. He's annoying!" Shirley complained.
"You are annoying too, and I don't wanna sit with you even though I... I kinda like you" Fred said prompting us to burst into laughter except for Shirley who didn't find the statement funny.
The two continued to argue while Jessica, Suzanna and I hopped into the van through the back entrance. When they were done, Shirley walked to the back entrance and hopped into the van too.
Fred was then left to sit alone in the front. "Guys, don't forget to shut those doors off!" he muttered referring to the back doors.
"On it!" Shirley extended her hands and shut them off, "Happy now?!" she exclaimed.
"Sure I am!" he ignited the engine into action and put the car on motion.
"Careful Fred, don't be reckless!" Jessica warned the moment he made a crazy turn.
"Don't worry, I love my life!" he laughed sarcastically.
Thus, silence crept upon us. Everyone was just going through their phones until Jessica later broke the silence, "What happened back there?" she glanced at me.
"At Cornfield?" I asked.
"Yes, we couldn't find you" she said.
"Oh, someone snatched my phone away. I had to chase the coward to a cranny, he almost get away with it" I briefed her about what happened.
"You are lucky, you know that right?" Suzanna chimed in.
"Sure I am" I muttered and wondered, what if he had gotten away with the phone? Well, it wasn't as if it can't be tracked but it would spend some time to do that and would likely cost me a lot.
"Guys, St. Paul road has bunch of graves these days!" Fred announced, "Hold on tight, it's gonna be a rough ride on here"
"Okay, thanks for the heads-up!" Jessica said and told us to stay put.
There were no seatbelts in the back, hence we all held onto the grab handles we found around. Suddenly, the van reaches the bad road and it began shaking severally.
"So much gravels and the government is doing nothing about it," Fred complained, "One of these days, someone is gonna crash on here and die" he muttered.
By the mention of death, the thought of my parents bounced into my head. I don't want to die in a car crash like them, the fear was written allover my face as I shut my eyes... hoping to reach our destination soon, safe and sound.
