Ruby
"Are you sure it won't be too dangerous? I'm afraid of his reaction," Nafeesa said while doing my makeup.
Newana replied, "Oh, shut it! Ruby is ready to pull his last string of patience."
"But with this dress? Vexon will flip out. Either she will succeed or we three die," Nafeesa let out, and unfortunately, she was right.
I was wearing a red dress, which barely reached my knees. If I was to bend to pick up anything, one can get a clear view of what was underneath.
My phone buzzed.
Max:
I'm here. Come down.
"He is here, guys. Time to execute the plan," I said as they nodded.
The three of us left Newana's room and walked past the study. Vexon was sitting at his desk with the door open.
I waited behind a pillar while Nafeesa and Newana started to speak loudly in front of the study.
"Is Ruby really going on this date to the Blue Club?" Nafeesa asked Newana.
"Of course," Newana replied. "Why wouldn't she? She's already dressed and ready to go. Her date is waiting downstairs."
"But what about Vexon? He is still her husband," Nafeesa spoke aloud, making sure Vexon was hearing it all.
I peeked from behind the pillar. Vexon was listening intently.
"Vexon doesn't even pay attention to her. Why shouldn't she just date other people? Vexon will never forgive her for the crime she committed, Nafeesa."
Nafeesa nodded hearing Newana and that was my cue to leave.
I simply walked past them.
"Wow! She looks amazing. That guy will have a hard time controlling himself. Besides, it's a nightclub so everyone will have their eyes on her," Nafeesa said loudly.
I suppressed my laughter and went downstairs. Max was waiting there for me in a red suit. I could sense Vexon following me and standing up to watch me from the top of the stairs.
"You look stunning. However, this might be our last meeting, Rubster," Max mumbled and extended his hand.
I gladly took it. Max's hand was as cold as ice; he was petrified.
"Why?" I asked quietly.
"All I can see in my head is images of your husband slicing me to pieces with only his eyes. I might even be buried here," he answered.
I chuckled at his words. "Kiss my cheeks," I muttered.
He breathed out, "What?"
I said sternly, "Do it."
He nervously kissed my cheek.
"Is he still watching?" I asked Max.
He replied sweating in fear, "No, he is gone. I hope he didn't leave to retrieve his gun."
I laughed hearing him and said, "Thank you for helping me out.
Max whined, "Are you thanking me because I came here from Manitoba to Toronto just to get myself killed by your husband by going on a fake date with you?"
I shook my head in denial, a smile forming on my lips.
Max didn't know about Vexon being in the Gladiolus Mafia. If he had known, he never would have agreed to go on this fake date. No one knew that I was in hiding for the last six months. Even my friends were under the impression that I just stopped making contact with them.
"Let's go," I told him.
We walked out of the mansion together, hand in hand.
___
"I am going to die today. I am gonna die. I can't be saved. I will die before I can see the next sunrise. I am going to die," Max kept chanting as I rolled my eyes.
He had been mumbling this ever since we had gotten inside the car.
"What is wrong with you, Max?" I said in frustration, "You are not going to die."
"Of course! Out of all people, why did you choose me? You could have called Steve," Max said, fear evident in his voice.
I sighed and gave him a firm look. "You are the only loyal and trustworthy friend I know, Max."
"Then starting tomorrow, you will have no loyal and trustworthy friends," he let out. It felt as if Max would burst into tears at any moment. I felt slightly bad for him, but I ended up narrowing my eyes at him.
"I said, nothing will happen to you. I will handle Vexon if he does something. Don't be a scaredy-cat."
I thought my words would calm him down, which worked for a minute until he spoke again, "I am going to die."
I groaned and suddenly, my eyes went on the rearview mirror. When I saw the familiar black Maserati Quattroporte following us, I smiled.
We reached the Blue Club.
My intention was not only to evoke a reaction from Vexon but also to make him quit smoking. Plus, I knew how to fight and Max knew taekwondo. We could beat anyone who would try to misbehave with us.
As soon as we entered the club, the familiar disgusting smell of alcohol hit my nostrils. Max wrapped an arm around my shoulder, knowing I hated this type of environment.
Through the glasses near the bar, I could see Vexon. Wasn't his car behind us? Then how did Vexon reach earlier than us?
Nonetheless, I took Max's hand which was on my shoulder, and placed it on my waist.
"Wha"
I cut off Max, saying, "Vexon is behind us."
"Great! I only have about five minutes to live then," Max whispered back to me.
I shook my head slightly and said, "Now, step two of the plan. Let's go and sit over there. You will hand me a cigarette."
Max didn't move at first, but I pushed him towards the bar so that we could sit there. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket after we sat. He didn't smoke, actually, it was just a part of the plan. I explained the entire plan to Max last night.
"Instead of taking you to a nice dinner, I am giving you a cigarette in a sleazy club on our first fake date. How alluring!" Max retorted.
I ignored his sarcastic comment and held the cigarette between my fingers. I took the lighter from the bartender, who was also involved in our plan, and lit the cigarette.
"You know, Max, I don't smoke, but my idiot husband does. So what he does, I should do as well," I said, loud enough that Vexon could hear.
The bartender shifted the glasses so that I could see Vexon's reflection. Vexon was approaching us.
"I am going to die. I am going to die..." Max rambled once again.
Rolling my eyes, I pressed the cigarette between my lips. Instantly, the cigarette was pulled from my lips. Someone held my wrist tightly and pulled me into his chiseled chest.
When I looked at the person, it was Vexon. His eyes stabbed into mine like daggers. Before I could even open my mouth, he freed myself from his grip. He moved swiftly to the bar and smashed the glasses there in anger.
I gasped.
"Vexon" Max started, but Vexon glared at him and pulled him up by his collar.
Vexon mumbled, making sure every word was crystal clear, "You are dead."
"I know!" Max cried.
Vexon began to wind up his first punch, but I grabbed his hand and said, "Vexon, stop! Leave him! This is Max, he is my best friend."
Vexon paused for a moment. Thinking for a while, he decided to leave Max and took a grip on my wrist. He started walking and I could only try to match his pace.
I turned around and gave Max a thumbs up, a smirk taking over my lips.
I win the challenge, Vexon Bevine.
