Kendrik
"So, what do you think of the situation now?" I asked Pearl and she sat beside me, tired of yelling.
"I don't know. Did you talk to Vexon?" she asked. I shook my head, while she sighed. "Leave the anger, Kendrik. What's done is done. We can't undo it. Learn to accept and move on."
Her words were very convincing and I really loved it.
I let out, "I won't until he himself explains it to me. If he tells me, he will. If he doesn't, I won't force him. And as far as I know, he will tell me soon."
"Pearl," I breathed, making her hum in response. "What do you think? Will Ruby really escape?" I was curious to know, and silently wished she didn't.
She chortled and said, "In every Mafia marriage in this world, which woman didn't try to run?"
It was true. Every woman tried but did not succeed. Some were living a happy life right now, whereas some were in the grave.
"But if she tries, Vexon will be upset," I mumbled.
"I know. But as far as I know Ruby, she's already figuring out things," Pearl said and I shook my head in disappointment.
Don't do anything stupid, Ruby, please.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Pearl went to open, only to find Vexon was there. "Since when did you start knocking?" I asked jokingly, while he rolled his eyes.
"Come in." Pearl motioned him to get inside, but he stayed outside.
"I just want to talk to Kendrik, if that's okay with you," he said and Pearl grinned.
"No problem, he's all yours," Pearl mumbled.
I got out and we went to our personal Bevine office we had in our house. Cason was already there. I looked at him and then at Vexon before asking, "Is everything alright?"
___
RUBY
"Get up, sleepyhead. For God's sake! I swear I'll go have breakfast downstairs alone," Vexon's voice woke me up from my sleep.
I yawned and rubbed my eyes. Removing the blanket and the pillow I had held on my chest, I rolled from the left side of the bed to the right side.
"At last, you woke up! Snorlax." I looked as to where his voice was coming from. Vexon was standing near the couch, glaring at me. He was already ready, wearing blue pants with a white buttoned-up shirt. His blue blazer was on the couch. "Are you going to stare at me for nothing? At least do me the honor by getting up from the bed," he said, his pissed-off tone made me feel sleepier.
But I didn't sleep because I was hungry and breakfast was a must right now. So I got up from the bed and stretched my hands.
"You're so slow and lazy," he mumbled and went in front of the dressing table. He wore his cufflinks, and watch. Then he started playing with his hair.
"Whatever," I muttered and went inside the washroom to freshen up.
___
"Good morning!" I chirped and was about to sit on the chair I sat on yesterday. But before I could, Vexon pulled that chair and sat.
It took me a moment to grasp the situation. Until Catherine entered, and said, "Good morning, Vex and others."
I sat on Vexon's seat, giving a forced smile. I really didn't have a choice. It was either I sat on this chair or on Catherine's because those two were the only empty chairs left in the dining room.
Catherine glared at me, before pulling the chair beside me.
God bless me!
I glared at Vexon which made him smirk.
I looked at Cason for help, but he just mouthed, 'I pity you.' I had an urge to throw the chocolate milk jug on his white shirt right now. When I just glanced at Orson, he didn't even bother to look at me. Looking at Kace, he and Kendrik were busy discussing something maybe about the armaments thus, I failed to grab their attention.
My only hope was my sister. But she just gave me, I'm watching you look, which made me roll my eyes.
Everyone started eating. Even though Vanera was the quietest Bevine, she was very observant, which made me wonder, did she rule the Mafia world after her husband's death? Was it the reason for her being secretive?
"Couldn't you bear our closeness?" Catherine snapped at me.
Ignoring her, I started applying Nutella on the bread. Usually, I have bread and Nutella, along with a chocolate shake for breakfast.
"Mine and Vex's closeness. Answer me!"
I avoided her once again, until Vexon whispered, sending chills to my spine, "Answer her."
I narrowed my eyes at him, which made him chuckle. Just then, my eyes fell on what he's having as breakfast. Just a cup of coffee. No bread, no cereal-nothing, but a cup of coffee. Couldn't he drink water instead?
"Where is your breakfast?" I asked him, not realizing I had grabbed everyone's attention.
He cleared his throat before speaking, "Here." He pointed to a cup of coffee.
"Just a cup of coffee? No cereal or bread?" I was beyond annoyed. Was he poor?
"Well, since you didn't know, that's what I always have for breakfast," he answered.
"Yes. I tried so hard to change this habit, Ruby dear. But he never did," Vanera said, giving me a sad look.
I told Vexon, facing him, "Doesn't that make you sick or something? I mean, hungry tummy, angry mommy. Didn't that hit your head ever?" Most of them slightly laughed hearing this, but my eyes were on Vexon and him on mine.
Whenever I used to skip breakfast, my mom used to say, 'Hungry tummy, angry mommy' which made me never miss my meal.
"Ah well. Old habits die hard, didn't that hit your head before you started preaching?" he retorted, making me scowl a little.
"No wonder why, you're always grumpy," I deadpanned.
"Why does it matter, Ruby? Vex is still fit and strong," Catherine let out, which I decided to avoid. Arguing with her was not worthy of my time.
"Cason, Kendrik, and Kace, do me a favor. If he ever faints, just dump him somewhere," I told them, they smiled at me.
"Aye aye, dear, sister-in-law," Cason mocked.
"What's wrong if I don't eat breakfast? You can't expect me to change my habit within a-" I cut him off, by shoving the Nutella smeared bread I had on my hand on his mouth.
"Finish this and another slice which I will be giving. Then you can bark all you want." I huffed and started smearing Nutella on another bread.
After I was done, I kept it on a plate and placed it in front of him. Already he had finished that piece I put in his mouth and looked at me in a weird way. I didn't know what way. It showed a weird type of emotion, which I wasn't familiar with.
"Eat," I ordered and he took the slice on the plate.
I was about to take another bread, this time for me to eat because I fed him the half-eaten one. But I stopped when I saw everyone looking at me in amusement. But Catherine rolled her eyes and Newana was busy looking at something on her phone while eating her cereal.
"What?" I asked as this was starting to get on my nerves.
"No-nothing," Pearl said while the other Bevines looked back at their plate. What was wrong with everyone?
"You're a man stealer," Catherine blurted out of nowhere.
Okay, I had enough of this Catherine.
"Says the one flirting with my husband," I answered her at last.
"You listen-" I cut her off by speaking aloud.
"So, how long are you going to stay Catherine? Just curious, don't mind." I shot a fake smile and her nose flared up in anger.
"Just curious or furious?" Newana asked me.
I arched an eyebrow. "Sorry?"
Newana further spoke, "You're trying to rule here, aren't ya? You're not the queen yet. The coronation wasn't even held. So stop acting like a queen, cause you aren't."
What the hell was she talking about?
"No, you must be-" Pearl cut me short when I tried to answer.
"What's the issue? Why are you dragging the coronation thing here? She just asked Catherine out of curiosity. Stop twisting her words like yours."
"Excuse me? It has been two days since you're here, and yet you're acting like you are the boss," Newana snapped back at Pearl.
"Yes, I am the eldest daughter-in-law here. You better respect. And Ruby is older in relation to you as well, so learn to show some concern." I sighed as Pearl continued, "Even though it has been two days, it took me a second to understand your nature. It is just like a cockroach. Ugly."
"Pearly," I stopped her when I noticed the Bevine brothers, including Kace, were enjoying the fight and they wouldn't stop them. Vanera was as usual quiet. "Stop it. Let it be," I completed my sentences.
Catherine chuckled. "Look who is trying to be a deity."
"Yeah, as if you know the difference," I snapped back at Catherine.
"Tell your sister to stop insulting my innocent Cat!" Newana ordered Pearl.
Pearl just rolled her eyes before she smirked."I stop her whenever she's wrong."
Newana glared at Pearl while Catherine glared at me. We gave them a challenging look. Guess, the battle begins.
"Vexon, Kace, and Kendrik, I need to talk to you. Let's head for the office," Vanera said but none of us broke the challenging glare.
"I'll drop you, Orson," Cason's voice was dripping with nervousness.
"Sure." Orson instantly got up.
"Let's go, Mom," Kendrik said and they stood up.
"Don't do anything stupid," Vexon whispered to me. "Take care."
With that, they all left, leaving the four of us.
"There's still time for you both to apologize. I don't give anyone a second opportunity," Newana said.
"Oh, I am so honored!" Pearl said sarcastically.
"You still have time," Catherine supported her elder sister.
"So, Cat. Did you get kicked in drain sewerage? No wonder why your filthy steps are ruining my house," I taunted.
"Argh!" Catherine growled.
"We are going to get you back. You have no idea what you have started," Newana said and shoved her phone in her pocket of denim jeans, "Let's go, Cat."
After they left, I looked at Pearl. We were silent for a few seconds before bursting into laughter.
"You have no idea what you have started," Pearl mimicked Newana, which made me laugh even more.
"Let's go, Cat," I mimicked her too.
"They are weird. I mean, why would she twist everything like that? And then there's that sister. I swear Ruby, now I am blessed to have you as my sister. Thanks to God, you aren't like her."
I shook my head, smiling.
"Did you finish your breakfast?" she asked me and I nodded.
I just ate half of a Nutella bread and drank my chocolate shake. I was full of the arguments I had with Newana and Catherine, so I wasn't hungry anymore.
"Good." She smiled at me and further spoke, "Lemme give you a tour of the mansion then."
I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion. Wasn't she new here as well? How would she give me a tour?
"I had seven years of relationship with Kendrik. Do you think he never brought me to his house?" she told me, knocking some sense into me.
"Oh," I said, "Show me around then."
We both stood up and the servants took this as a cue to clean the table.
