Chapter 23

"Daddy, why do people say our house is haunted?" I whispered to Daddy.

He looked at me, stayed silent, then focused back on the computer.

Daddy would sit for long hours by the old computer at home every day.

He looked at many photos Mommy took and watched those old surveillance videos just like Mommy used to.

One morning Daddy spoke to the air, "Ivy, where's my tie?"

The room stayed quiet with no answer.

He seemed confused, then went to find his tie in the bedroom on his own.

In that morning,I had barely started playing at kindergarten when the driver came to get me. He looked serious and said Daddy had an accident.We had to rush to the hospital.

Just as we got to the hospital, I saw Grandma gripping the doctor, "Tell him if he goes, his daughter will become an orphan. What should we do then?"

When Daddy woke up, he struggled to get up and hugged me.He said, "Don't worry, I will always be here for you." I hid in his embrace, trusting him.

On the day Dad was discharged from the hospital, he hugged me and said, "Don't worry, I will never leave you."

Grandma stood beside us, wiping away tears from her face.

Ms. Cross visited our house not long after we got home.

She held my with smile on her face, "Luna, let me be your new mommy!I will love you as your mommy did"

Standing there, I didn't know what to do. Mommy had told me smiles aren't always friendly.

Grandma's nanny step forward and said, "What do you mean? You're not welcome here!"

Ms. Brook also stood firmly by me, "Leave! How dare you target a child?"

Ms. Cross didn't want to give up, "I just think Luna is too young to be without a mother. Anyway, I will be marrying Mr. Stone, so I'll be her mother anyway,right?"

Ms. Brook got angry, "We know who you are. To me, you're connected to Ivy's death!"

She wanted to beat Ms. Cross out of anger, but she did not do it in the end.

She scoffed, "You don't have a say in this matter. Ivy's been gone over a year.We love each other.Who else besides me can be Luna's mom?"

"You called this love?You left him in at his most difficult moment.Ivy remains by his side through all the trouble.She was far better than you."

Ms. Cross got enraged and they started to fight. The nanny rushed to help Ms. Brook. It was such a chaos! Their fight didn't end until the security guard separated them.

When Daddy came home, He learned about what was going on there.he coldly told Ms. Cross, "Don't come back. I don't want to see you again."

Ms. Cross looked hurt, "Why can't we be together again?"

Daddy responded, "No. At the hospital, you hung up Ivy's call and deleted her message. Did you think you could hide that forever?"

"You've helped me but also hurt me. We are even now.I don't want to have anything to do with you."

Ms. Cross left in tears and never returned.
