The four of us sat on the couch, watching the surveillance footage, without saying a word.
After Lucas visited once, I installed cameras in my apartment. I never know who might barge in.
Today, it turned out to be useful. I sat in the corner of the couch, munching on an apple, while Lucas repeatedly tortured himself by watching the video over and over.
I slammed the computer shut.
"Watch the footage at home if you want, it's just that I drank too much and ruined their clothes. What else could I do when I was that drunk? Lucas, stop making a fuss, okay?"
Lucas looked up. "Vivian, am I making a fuss? You're my girlfriend, and when you and other men are lying in the same bed, have you ever thought about how I feel?"
I scoffed. "Then when you pushed me to someone else, did you ever think about how I felt?"
It was easy to strike a nerve, wasn't it?
Lucas came to my house to cook, hoping for a fresh start.
He wanted to pretend nothing had happened, but I wasn't going to let that happen.
Lucas froze.
I threw in another jab. "Well, I do have to thank you, one is young and in great shape, the other gentle and sweet. I like both of them."
Lucas slammed his fist into the couch, his eyes red as he crawled to my feet.
"Vivian, take back what you just said, and I'll pretend I didn't hear anything, alright? We used to be so good together."
It's hard to believe he still remembered. We had been the most envied couple in school, and now we had completely torn each other apart. I pinched his chin. "Lucas, you still remember the old times?"
We had seen how much we loved each other before. How could I not notice the change?
Lucas knelt on the ground. "Vivian, let's start over, alright? I'll never lie to you again."
I slowly pried his hand off mine. "There's no need. I'm never going to find you again."
Our family backgrounds were too different, and his mother had always opposed our relationship. It wasn't until the other day when Sebastian found me in the fitting room that I realized Lucas's way of handling things had led him to become who he was today. Should I blame myself?
"Then you should know better than anyone, I no longer like you."
"I tied a red string with a bell on it. You won't be able to find me anymore."
I had been waiting to say this to him for a long time. It just so happened that the unexpected today made it happen sooner than expected.
Lucas had said he'd handle everything. He just kept lying and hiding the truth.
He didn't want to leave, so I called his mother.
On one hand, he was comforting me, while on the other, he had already agreed to set him up for a blind date.
His mother's messenger arrived quickly. When Lucas was finally dragged away, he wouldn't let go of my hand.
In the end, Zanen had to persuade and coax him to leave.
We had been together for over six years, but in the end, it was all just a mess. I sat on the couch, rubbing my temples.
"So you two aren't leaving? Do you have something on your mind?"
Sebastian was the first to speak up. "Does that mean... I can be promoted?"
???
My words caught in my throat, not yet spoken, when Zanen lifted her eyelids.
"There should be some manners, Seb," he said. "She was the one who mentioned the good figure first."
...
I drove both them away.
