Truthfully, there had always been clues to follow.
Lucas Xavier wasn't fond of getting too close to me. If I mentioned work matters, he'd frown after a couple of sentences.
But the man in front of me wasn't like that.
When he saw me walking over, Sebastian closed his laptop and slid his hand up my nightgown's hem, his breath uneven.
I obediently leaned against his shoulder, swaying slightly.
"Tomorrow's your birthday. Have you thought about how to celebrate?"
His hand froze at my waist, and Sebastian looked up at me.
Tomorrow was Lucas's birthday.
But wasn't he lying to me? Wasn't he Lucas?
I gazed at him innocently, and Sebastian's Adam's apple bobbed as he lost interest.
"Same as always. Just call a few friends over for a gathering."
I climbed back into his arms and mumbled, "I've got a birthday present here. Don't you want to open it early?"
Sebastian did have some willpower, but not enough.
Exhausted, I deliberately lay on his chest, calling out Lucas's name.
Sebastian's hand froze, and he patted my head, his expression unreadable.
"Vivian, get some rest."
That night, I slept deeply. When I woke up, it was already afternoon.
Sebastian had his back to me, talking on the phone. "Got it. I'll take her there."
I curled around his waist, lazily asking, "Who are you talking to?"
Sebastian's hand shook, and the phone fell to the floor.
I kissed him, pretending I didn't notice the name displayed on the phone screen: Lucas.
