Leander remembered the first day he spoke to Indra.
The weather wasn't great.
It was cloudy, with no sunshine.
His father had kicked him out of the house, leaving him with nowhere to go.
His credit cards were frozen. With the little cash he had left, he bought a few cans of beer and went to the park.
Indra sat on the bench beside him, sketchbook in hand, quietly drawing.
He tossed the beer can aside, lit a cigarette, and looked at her.
Her profile was quiet and gentle.
Indra sensed his gaze and turned to meet his eyes.
After a few seconds of silence, she stood and walked over to him.
Leander felt a flicker of panic. He had a bad temper when he was upset, which was why he usually kept to himself.
When she reached him, he stubbed out the cigarette.
Indra handed him a band-aid, gesturing to the back of his hand.
Only then did he notice a small cut on his hand, blood beading at the surface.
He chuckled at the insignificant scratch. If she saw the bruises beneath his clothes, she might insist on dragging him to the hospital.
Leander accepted the band-aid, casually sticking it over the cut.
Then, emboldened, he asked her for money.
Without hesitation, she gave him all the cash in her wallet.
His eyes sparkled with amusement. "Aren't you afraid I'm a scammer?"
"I know you. We're from the same school," she replied softly, her light brown eyes clear and untainted.
The fire in his chest dissipated inexplicably.
"What's your name?"
"Indra Fairchild."
He remembered now—she was a freshman this year, often seen sitting by the basketball court watching him play.
One of his teammates had joked that she probably liked him.
With a careless smile, he asked, "Want to be my girlfriend?"
Indra's eyes widened. "But you already have a girlfriend."
"Not anymore."
That night, Leander sent his current girlfriend a breakup text, turning her into his ex.
He'd always been casual about relationships.
Initially, he just wanted to mess around with Indra.
But they ended up staying together for two years.
Gradually, he realized that only she could make his heart race.
Being with her made him less irritable, made the world seem less hateful.
Someone once told him that Indra had ulterior motives for approaching him.
Leander felt a strange sense of relief.
He was terrified she'd uncover the dark secrets he carried.
If she'd approached him for his family background, that wasn't so bad.
His girl was sweet and easy to please.
When she was upset, all it took was her favorite snacks to cheer her up.
The night he won the race, he was uncontrollably elated.
He kissed her and took her to a hotel.
When he came to his senses, he vaguely recalled her saying she wanted to stay with him forever.
That night, for the first time, she made him wait.
A diamond ring sat in his pocket. He thought if she got too angry and he couldn't pacify her, he'd give her the ring as an early birthday present.
But that night, she asked for a breakup.
Leander lost control of his emotions and completely lost his mind.
He couldn't remember much after that.
All he remembered was her saying she was scared.
Her clean, fair face was stained with blood.
He suddenly felt repulsed by himself, realizing how much he resembled his father.
No one would want to spend their life with someone like him.
The day they broke up, it rained heavily.
Leander stood in the rain, watching her walk away.
Her hands were so small. Why couldn't he hold onto them?
