For the third time, Janet brought up divorce. Maybe that man really was exceptional. I felt conflicted inside, still wanting to avoid facing the truth.
I was drunk out of my mind in the lounge. When the bartender asked if I needed anything, I pulled out a wad of cash, subtly telling him that I had money and wouldn't skip out on the bill. But he insisted on calling someone to pick me up.
I allowed him to unlock my phone and watched as he dialed Janet's number, stubbornly hoping she'd worry about me.
But how could he know that Janet was the first name in my contact list?
I couldn't let my last bit of dignity be destroyed by him, so I raised my hand and ended the call.
Janet, soft-hearted as always, came to pick me up.
I leaned on her, still half-drunk, and asked her who that man was.
She actually said he was the bartender!
How could my charm, Peyton, be outdone by a bartender?
After that, my memory went blank.
But when I woke up, I found my own slippers by the bedside.
Janet had picked them up and placed them there for me to use.
Maybe, just maybe, we didn't need to get a divorce.
Perhaps because Janet was right next to me, I slept unusually well. The biological clock didn't fail to wake me up, but I just watched her sleeping face, basking in a peaceful sense of contentment.
Until 8:30, when Janet's phone alarm went off. Without thinking, I turned it off. No need to wake her up to discuss divorce.
……
In the end, things turned out for the best.
The process of resolving misunderstandings was quite embarrassing—between men and women... My friend almost gave in.
I almost agreed to a monogamous arrangement with Janet, though it didn't feel entirely fair to Howard. Can I even say this? Maybe it's best not to mention it.
But Janet said to me, "Tomorrow, we'll still be us." Heh.
