After the little episode last night, I woke up to the bright morning sun. Peyton was right there beside me, looking at me wide-eyed. He looked fresh and clean, with no sign of the drunkenness from the night before.
The moment I opened my eyes, he said the first thing.
"Janet, it's 10 o'clock."
It was 10 o'clock. Over 9 o'clock, actually. I'd missed the scheduled time for the divorce. I turned over, got out of bed to wash up, and ignored him.
He followed me like a little shadow, his eyes bloodshot in the mirror.
Once I finished, he spoke again. "Janet, can we not get divorced?" I pushed him aside and climbed back into bed. He knelt beside me.
His tone turned colder. I made the issue clear. "What about Meadow? What about the kids?" Peyton paused for two seconds, his face full of confusion. "Why should they matter to me?"
I frowned.
Suddenly, he grabbed my hand, looking earnest. "What does that man have that I don't? Tell me, and I'll learn." I was about to argue, but his question made me stop.
Which man is he talking about?
I thought, then asked aloud. Peyton's eyes fell, his expression full of grievance.
"The one who made you want to divorce me."
I laughed.
It's funny, how people really do smile when they're angry.
I looked at him, speaking slowly, "I'm divorcing you because of a woman." Peyton froze.
He pointed at me, trembling, his mouth opening and closing, but no sound came out. His eyes quickly filled with tears. He was upset now.
"Meadow."
I knocked on the bed, reminding him to stay on topic.
But instead, his tears flowed even more heavily. He sobbed, his voice cracking. "Meadow's married with kids. If you like her, it's never going to work out!"
Things seemed off. I quickly handed him a tissue. "Isn't Meadow your first love?"
"Besides you, who else could be my first love!"
Peyton lowered his head, wiping away his tears. He twisted the tissue into a ball, his tearful expression like a blooming pear blossom that couldn't help but stir excitement. There was no time to enjoy the moment. I froze.
Something big had happened.
I finally had to sadly admit that Peyton and I's minds had never truly aligned from the Janett.
