The drama did indeed arrive, but it wasn't between Peyton and Meadow. Instead, I was the one caught up in it.
In the second year after graduation, during the day of the arranged marriage between the two families, my older sister and his older brother both ran away from the wedding.
To prevent the two families from losing face at a wedding attended by the leading figures in the business world, we were forced to step in and take their places.
As the host described our childhood friendship in vivid detail, we nearly burst into laughter. Unlike the typical childhood sweetheart story, we had always been more like brothers—shoulder to shoulder, with me coming up with the wild ideas and him carrying them out. Our bond was more mischievous than affectionate. Reciting vows side by side was nothing short of a nightmare.
To complete the charade, we were ushered into the carefully prepared bridal suite amid a chorus of congratulations from both families. It didn't bother me much. Girls in this social circle rarely have control over their own marriages, and I had long since come to terms with it. Besides, marrying Peyton, even if it wasn't out of love, was still considered a blessing compared to marrying a stranger.
But it was Peyton who suffered.
Just before the wedding, he was pushed to the ceremony with his hands bound by a tie. When he saw me in my wedding dress, the despair on his face hadn't even faded.
Thinking back on it, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for him, but then I shook my head and knocked on his door. When Peyton opened the door, he was wrapped in a bathrobe, his hair dripping wet, and his face flushed from the steam.
[...Is something wrong?]
Peyton was as succinct as ever.
I watched as water droplets fell from his hair onto his face, tracing down his jawline and dripping onto his chest. Even though we had grown up together, I had never seen him like this. I couldn't help but narrow my eyes and whistle teasingly. He paused for a moment, then followed my gaze and looked down. His Adam's apple moved slightly.
"You..."
The emotions in his eyes were too complicated, his tone tinged with a hint of testing. I fought the urge to reach out and touch him, quickly pushing him away. This was not appropriate. Not appropriate at all. I placed the computer on the table and typed out "Marriage Agreement" for him to see.
Peyton slowly turned around, his lips pressed into a straight line as he grabbed a towel nearby and began rubbing it through his hair.
My fingers clattered on the keyboard as I spoke without stopping.
"Actually, getting married has its benefits. No more listening to them nagging every holiday. We'll have each other as a shield."
"We'll just sign an agreement."
"If one of us likes someone else one day, we'll divorce without any conditions."
"What do you think?"
I couldn't help but think of Meadow's beautiful face, my gaze eager.
I wanted to avoid being the villainess in a novel. If I were going to play a part, I would be the bystander, quietly watching. Peyton only nodded and swiftly placed his fingerprint on the paper version. It seemed like he had already planned for this, only I had jumped the gun.
