Peyton's first love was Meadow, his university classmate. I had met her once when I went to his school for a lecture. At that time, she was adjusting equipment backstage.
Meadow Osborne was incredibly beautiful, the kind of person whose delicate features were unforgettable at first glance. She raised her hand to adjust the long hair falling beside her ear, her expression focused and serious. But the equipment seemed to malfunction, and she frowned slightly, looking out toward the audience with a pleading gaze.
There were still thirty minutes before the lecture was scheduled to Janett, and the audience was sparse.
I turned to Peyton and commented, "That girl is so pretty…"
Before I could finish, I saw him stand up and walk toward the backstage.
I Janeted at his back for a few seconds.
Peyton naturally took over the control panel in front of Meadow, and she watched him intently, her eyes full of admiration. Watching this pure and loving scene made my heart race. It was the first time I had seen him so attentive to a girl, after so many years of being childhood friends.
For someone like Peyton, who was so reserved in his affections, it felt a little late.
During his adolescence, when the flames of infatuation were at their most intense, the girls who liked him shyly handed him love letters at the door of the classroom. He simply glanced at them indifferently and asked, "Who are you giving this to?"
Compared to before, the gentle smile on his face now—calling it a rare sight would be an understatement.
The equipment finally worked again, and the two shared a smile.
Then, he turned around, and our eyes locked. The smile on his face immediately vanished, replaced by a slight awkwardness. I squinted and teased him with a playful look.
Peyton turned to say something to Meadow, then lowered his head and walked back to sit beside me, attempting to cover up his flushed ears. "She's my classmate, Meadow." I nodded, not revealing his embarrassed reaction.
He clearly liked her, yet here he was, a grown man in his twenties, still so shy. I couldn't help but roll my eyes.
After he graduated, I went to deliver flowers to him and casually scanned the crowd. But I didn't see Meadow. Peyton only lowered his brows and spoke in a flat tone, "She went abroad."
There was a hint of melancholy in his voice.
It was clear now.
This time, he really couldn't get over her.
According to the plot of the novel, there should be some interesting drama in the coming years. I could already envision the over-the-top plot in my mind, and I was excited to watch it unfold.
