But Laylah, who left me behind, didn't have good intentions either. However, I decided to give her the chance to play her game.
As most of the people had left, I brightened up and asked, "Laylah, what kind of activity is it?"
Laylah just gave me a look, signaling me to wait, and then turned to Percival. "Percival, you go ahead. The rest of us girls will be taking part in activities. It's not really appropriate for a man to stay here."
Percival glanced at me, clearly hesitant.
"Don't worry, Percival. I only want to get to know Miss Langley better. After all, I missed so much when I wasn't around for those three years."
Percival's expression softened. I shook my head.
How did you end up like this because of her?
But as Percival walked past me, he quietly reminded me, "If anything feels off, you can call me."
I thought about Percival, who was already on my blacklist, and decided there was no need for that.
Hearing him say that, I found it amusing.
Are you starting to doubt that the person you've held on a pedestal for years isn't as flawless as you once thought?
---
When the banquet hall was empty except for Laylah and her group of friends, I felt somewhat out of place.
"The hall's empty now. Let's head upstairs to the suite and have some fun," Laylah said with a smile still on her face, though there was a coldness in her eyes when they turned toward me.
As the door to the suite closed behind us, that coldness intensified.
"Piper, let's be frank, shall we?"
"I don't know how you got involved with Emery, but with his family background, he could never marry a woman with nothing to offer."
"As for you, just like with Percival before, it's only for fun."
I didn't bother to comment.
For them, it was indeed just for fun.
"Is that all you wanted to say by keeping me here, Laylah?" I asked. Violet smiled, but her eyes were full of coldness. She pulled out her phone and showed me something.
"I just had someone inquire about Emery. Want to guess what he said?"
"He said you're just a distraction."
She laughed so hard that tears were nearly falling from her eyes.
I, on the other hand, found time to chat with the system in my head.
【Does Percival know his first love is so crazy?】
【I guess he doesn't.】
【I also think so. But I suspect Emery should be on his way here now.】
Is the female lead's intelligence really this low in this novel world?
Or maybe she's gambling, betting that Emery wouldn't Janett a war between the two families just for me?
Those born at the top of the food chain wouldn't even spare a second thought for someone like me with no power.
The relationships between the elite families in the capital are so complicated, pulling a thread could unravel the whole web.
Since Laylah is preparing to do something to me today, she wouldn't leave any evidence behind.
I'm sure all the surveillance cameras in the building have been turned off by now.
Without any evidence, Emery would never risk offending both the families just for a small thing like me.
A strange emotion surged in my heart once again.
Why?
Why did I feel, deep down, that if something happened to me here, Emery would turn the entire city upside down? Just like he had done before, when he had already done so much for me.
