Felix meant every word. He didn't take me back home. Instead, he brought me to a hotel. He told me that if I dared to run, he would immediately go find Lucas. And whatever happened after that, he wouldn't be able to guarantee.
I shuddered, avoiding his burning breath, trying to steady my nerves. I demanded my phone. "I need to call my mom. I need to tell her I'll be working late tonight, or she'll start looking for me." I had overlooked Felix's ability to see through me.
He sneered.
"Don't think just because I've been abroad that I don't know anything."
"Your mother ran off with my father's compensation money and some man."
"As for you, my dear, she never planned on accepting you."
I was shocked at how well Felix seemed to know everything, but I didn't show it. I pretended to stay calm, replying, "My mother didn't abandon me. She just—"
Felix squeezed my chin hard, his voice turning sharp. "Libby, you're still the same liar." This time, I was lying.
My mother had indeed abandoned me.
She had met another man and become a stepmother to his child.
I had seen them by chance once; she was holding the little girl's hand, walking and laughing, asking what she wanted to eat. She even stopped to buy her some candy.
It suddenly occurred to me that when I was six and wanted some candy, the only thing I got was her scolding.
"You're always eating, just like your dad."
Since then, I hadn't called her once. It had been three years now.
"Felix, do you have to trample on me like this?" I asked, tears welling up.
"Yes." Felix's voice was cold. "I won't let you have it easy."
He was truly cruel.
When I compared Felix with Lucas, I found Lucas was the better man. At least he had never humiliated me like this. He would even buy me candy.
Maybe because I was exhausted from the constant turmoil, I skipped dinner and fell asleep.
I had fragmented dreams.
Under the starry sky, Felix confessed to me, asking if I wanted to be with him. I blushed but didn't speak. He pinned me against a tree, kissing me recklessly. Our breaths mingled, and I whispered, "…Yes."
But then, under the same sky, Felix choked me, calling me worthless, telling me to die.
The next memory was the day before he left for abroad. He trapped me in his arms, his words venomous: "If you even think about dating anyone, I'll kill you."
I opened my eyes, disoriented, only to realize I was in a hotel. Felix was gone. I grabbed my bag and sneaked out. This time, I was determined to stay far away from him.
