I thought, with Curtis's temper, he would either snap at me or ignore me. But he just hummed and actually slowed the car down.
"Thanks!"
I licked my dry lips, feeling awkward, regretting my impulsive decision to get into the car. Curtis seemed to sense it.
He turned on the stereo, playing some calming light music. He raised his chin slightly.
"There's water inside, help yourself."
"Thanks."
I should've exchanged some pleasantries, but I really wasn't in the mood.
So, I lazily leaned against the window, staring out without speaking. My thoughts were chaotic.
I thought about ten years ago, the years in between, and today.
I couldn't make sense of it all.
I knew that no matter how casual I appeared, I was still upset.
But more than being upset, I was exhausted.
Exhausted from the very core.
I took out my phone and sent Killian a message.
[My suggestion: you and Ariella should keep things quiet for now. Let's slowly distance ourselves. We can talk details when I return. Of course, if you want to cut it off immediately, you'll bear the consequences.]
After sending the message, I closed my eyes. When I opened them again, we had already arrived at the airport.
It felt like just a blink of an eye, but forty minutes had passed. My heart skipped a beat as I hurriedly got out of the car.
I met Curtis's gaze, who was standing outside, smoking.
"Are you awake? I was going to call you after finishing this cigarette."
"Thanks for today. I'll treat you to a meal when I get back."
"Wait!"
Killian stubbed out his cigarette.
"Let's go together."
"Huh?"
"I'm on the same flight as you."
"You're going to France too? The fashion show?"
My rusty brain started turning, and I answered my own question, "Yeah, you must've been invited too!" I convinced myself of my own conclusion. So, I didn't notice that Curtis secretly sighed in relief.
