A year had passed, and he had lost a lot of weight. His gaze had become sharper, and for a moment, it lingered on me with a scrutinizing look. He poured me a glass of water and asked politely:
"Miss, could you tell me why you're here?"
I had no memories, so I could only shake my head:
"I can't remember. It seems they sent me here to please you, saying... I resemble your first love."
Valentine smiled faintly.
His gaze lowered as he looked at the wine glass on the coffee table: "That's quite a misunderstanding."
"I'll have my assistant send you back. Please don't do this again."
He was courteous and dismissed me.
I looked at his gentle face and felt a strange sense of confusion.
He seemed perfectly normal...
Gentle, polite, and respectful even to a woman who had suddenly appeared in his room—he didn't look mad at all.
The system was truly messed up.
I pressed my lips together, stood up, and said:
"Sorry, I'll leave now."
"Mm."
Valentine gave a slight nod, his demeanor noble yet distant.
---
Valentine's assistant brought me some clothes.
A light green dress, perfect for late spring and early summer. After putting it on, I walked outside.
Valentine stood with his back to me, on the phone.
The setting sun shone through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a warm glow over his shoulders and neck, surrounding him in a soft halo.
I hesitated for a moment, then abandoned the idea of saying "goodbye," stepping out and gently closing the door behind me.
I asked Valentine's assistant to take me to a bookstore.
Outside the bookstore, I tried calling the system in my mind. I called repeatedly, but there was no response.
I pressed my fingers to my forehead in frustration.
No money. No phone. No memories.
I didn't even know what my name was anymore... What was the system playing at?
I sat on the steps outside the bookstore, resting my hands on my face, my mind swirling in confusion.
I had only two connections to this world: the system and Valentine.
Now that the system was silent, my only option was to find Valentine. But... I really didn't want to.
I had used him, toyed with him, and then abandoned him without hesitation.
What right did I have to disturb his life, or even beg for his forgiveness?
I hugged my knees, gazing at the darkening sky in a daze, wondering if I should go to a park to wait the night out.
---
The late spring weather was still a bit chilly, and light raindrops began to fall.
I found a 24-hour library. As soon as I sat down and wiped off the water droplets, I saw the librarian approach.
"Sorry, miss, we're closed tonight." I said nothing and left.
The commercial street was bustling with shops, and even though it was late, many were still lit up.
I went to so many shops, but every single one of them politely asked me to leave.
It was as if they had all received the same order to avoid me, even the hotel front desk wouldn't let me stay.
The rain grew heavier.
I stood under an eave, the light green dress clinging to my body, soaking wet and freezing cold. I touched my numb arms and blew warm air into my hands.
I was being targeted. But by whom?
Without much hesitation, one name came to mind—Valentine.
