Lucas fell asleep.
I lay beside him, gently touching his ear, his brow, and his high nose bridge.
The system asked me.
"Are you just staying here?"
"What else can I do?"
I looked at his left hand, which was tightly gripping mine, and tiredly rubbed my forehead.
"If I leave, he'll go mad."
I thought it was selfish of me to let go of him, but I couldn't help it.
This fool, his way of punishing me was to hurt himself, making me feel guilty.
I couldn't bear it.
I had already lost my parents, lost my younger sister.
A living, breathing person was far more important than entangled love.
Lucas wanted me, so I stayed to be with him.
—As long as he could live happily.
The system cautiously asked:
"Can you tolerate living like that, with a tracker and listening device on you?"
I hesitated for a long time, but ultimately didn't respond.
---
When Lucas woke up, it was already quite late.
I was lying on the bed, watching entertainment news, and as soon as I turned my head, I bumped into his smiling eyes.
He was so happy, it was so obvious, his eyes squinting with joy.
His arm wrapped around my waist, his cheek gently leaning toward me: "Seraphine, you're really beautiful."
I ignored him and continued watching the news.
It wasn't that I cared about anything; I was just bored because I couldn't go anywhere, so I needed something to do.
Lucas noticed my boredom and his gaze darkened.
"What do you want to eat?"
"No need."
I flipped my pillow over. "I'm not hungry."
"Fried chicken or roast beef?"
"I don't want either."
"Then what do you want?"
I didn't reply this time.
My fingers quickly swiped across the screen. Just as I clicked on a news article, my phone was taken away by Lucas.
I sat up quickly, a little annoyed.
"You're not even letting me use my phone!"
He looked at me in confusion, his glass-like eyes showing unease, filled with anxiety and insecurity.
He seemed fragile, helpless, as if me shouting at him was an unforgivable crime.
I: "..." Stop playing the victim!
I buried my head in the blanket, angry at him for being unreasonable, and angry at myself for being soft-hearted. I cursed inwardly countless times.
Before I could calm down, I vaguely heard soft sobbing from outside the blanket.
—Lucas was crying?
I jumped out of the blanket.
