Eight years ago, the system had brought me here, tasked with caring for Alexander, providing the main characters with a good childhood.
At the time, I had been whipping Lucas.
I looked at his dark, wolf-like expression, then at Alexander and Eleanor, who were baring their teeth at me. I sighed.
I dropped the whip and had the butler apply medicine to Lucas's wounds. After he rested for four or five days, I sent them off to school.
At first, they didn't trust me. Every time they came home, they avoided me—wouldn't eat with me, wouldn't speak to me—until the day Lucas got into a fight with some thugs.
I was called into the school by the teacher. Sitting with my arms crossed, I stared coldly at the irate parents.
Once they had exhausted their anger, I casually said, "My family donated a building to this school this year. Is this how you treat my brother?"
The principal snapped out of her trance.
Lucas couldn't believe it.
His slender back straightened, and he turned, lowering his voice to ask me, "What do you want from me?"
I smiled and ruffled his hair, "I'm helping you, you ungrateful thing."
By the time everything was resolved, it was late. I looked at the brightly lit school building and nudged Lucas's arm.
"Go to your own business, I'm heading home. Bye."
He ignored me.
I took a couple of steps, then turned back and grabbed his sleeve, adopting the tone of a real guardian.
"You need to study hard."
In the book, he had been overwhelmed by taking care of his younger siblings and the constant abuse, which led him to perform poorly on the study. He failed to get into a good university and was constantly ridiculed afterward.
His throat bobbed as if he wanted to say something but ultimately kept silent.
Because I was already gone.
