I instinctively frowned, wanting to say something, but stopped myself. It wasn't my place to interfere. I walked past him, intending to leave.
But my wrist was caught.
His long fingers wrapped around me tightly, his hoarse voice trembling as he said, "Estelle, I remember everything now."
"Last life."
After six years of knowing each other, we finally sat down to have an honest conversation.
He explained that he had never understood why I hated him so much. It wasn't until he was lying on the hospital bed, delirious from the pain of my stab wound, that memories of our past life came flooding back.
I frowned. "If you remember, why don't you go find Alina?"
He fell silent.
After a while, he spoke slowly: "Recovering those memories didn't bring back the emotions. I can't feel the love I supposedly had for her, nor the hatred I supposedly had for you."
"Those fragments of memory feel like I'm watching someone else's life."
He gave a bitter laugh. "Estelle, I can't imagine ever treating you that way... doing such despicable things. It's unbearable."
"Pretend that Alina was your lover, and it'll make more sense," I said softly.
"You don't love her now, so your perspective is different from what it was in our past life."
I didn't want to linger on the subject. Taking a deep breath, I earnestly advised him:
"Don't dwell on it. Treat those memories as a dream."
"Get a thorough checkup, take care of yourself, work hard, and find someone who truly suits you."
"Life is short. Don't waste it on things so intangible and meaningless."
Ethan remained silent, his fingers fidgeting with the rim of his glass. After a long pause, he asked quietly:
"Do you not hate me anymore?"
"I don't," I answered honestly. "I stopped hating you the moment I stabbed you."
"I didn't have the courage to kill you. If I'd actually pushed you into the sea that day, I'd be haunted by nightmares for the rest of my life."
"I've been given a second chance, and I don't want to focus on the past anymore. I just want to live the rest of my life well."
"Ethan, let go of it too. Treat that past life as nothing but a dream."
"When we wake up, we still have to live in the present."
Ethan chuckled faintly, but the smile didn't reach his eyes.
