When I returned home, I discovered how much Alina had aged.
Her once-envied skin was gone, replaced by a haggard and sallow complexion. Despite her youth, wrinkles etched the corners of her eyes.
She sat silently, a shadow of her former self, blending into the background.
Her once striking presence, the kind that turned heads in a crowd, had vanished completely.
The White parents looked at me, their eyes filled with amazement, somewhere between flattery and sincerity.
"Estelle, you've grown even more beautiful."
"I didn't notice it before, but now it's so clear. You and Ethan make such a perfect pair..."
I didn't know how to respond. Tugging on Ethan's sleeve, I let him take over the conversation.
While Ethan entertained them, I wandered upstairs, wanting to revisit my old room.
Alina appeared like a ghost, standing in my path.
Her hair hung loose, her lips pale, and her face shadowed with bitterness as she glared at me with seething hatred.
"It's all your fault," she spat. "Ethan set me up because of you, dragging me down to this miserable state."
"You stole my life, my fiancé, and now you're here to take everything else that's mine..."
"That was never my intention," I replied softly. "I'm sorry you feel that way. The mistake of switching us at birth wasn't my doing. As for Ethan..."
I looked her in the eye."If you hadn't cornered me so ruthlessly, I wouldn't have turned to him for help."
"Alina, I never wanted to fight with you over anything. I just wanted to live my life in peace."
"You're still the cherished daughter of the White family. Your parents love you. There's no need to..."
Before I could finish, she lunged at me like a madwoman, clutching my shoulders and dragging us both toward the staircase.
We tumbled down together.
I heard Ethan's frantic shout.
Felt the searing pain as my back hit the floor.
Endured the suffocating weight of her body pressing against mine.
And saw the venom in her eyes.
Frame by frame, moment by moment, it was clear—
She hated me. Hated me enough to destroy us both.
