As in my previous life, Ethan's mother's surgery was a success.
The difference was, in my past life, I stayed entangled with him for another year, becoming his free bedmate.
This time, three days after his mother's condition stabilized, I ended things with him.
I even gave him a scandalous public humiliation.
In pouring rain, he stood stubbornly before me as I wrapped my arms around another man's waist. His voice was hoarse as he pleaded:
"Baby, don't do this. If you're mad at me, just tell me. Whatever I did wrong, I can change. Please, don't do this..."
I patted the back of the man beside me.
The man understood and immediately threw a punch, knocking Ethan into a muddy puddle. He followed with two kicks and spat in Ethan's face.
"Stay away from Estelle. She's my girlfriend now. If I see you bothering her again, I'll make sure you regret it."
---
For the next three years, I didn't see Ethan again.
I left for school abroad.
In my previous life, even though I struggled academically, my mother always assured me they'd take care of me, that I had nothing to worry about.
Later, I realized they only meant their real daughter.
A person needs some skills to survive, or they'll starve.
During those three years, I worked tirelessly—handing out flyers, washing dishes, even working as a hostess at a nightclub.
Greasy men's hands roamed my thighs, and I smiled faintly, unfazed, continuing to sell drinks.
Apart from tuition, I didn't take a single penny from the White family during those years.
I couldn't quite explain what I was holding onto.
The White family had raised me, spending a fortune on me, and I could never repay it all in this lifetime.
But I still wanted to owe them less, even if just a little.
