Caught in the web of my past with Damien, I thought Julius would be upset, would argue, would demand to know what I was hiding.
But he didn't.
He just curled up on the bed, wrapping himself tightly in the blanket. He bit his lip in a pitiful, lonely way and simply asked when we could go home.
His eyes were bloodshot, glistening faintly with unshed tears. He watched me carefully, filled with a mixture of trepidation and hope, and I could no longer keep it from him.
"I've already died once, Julius."
I sat upright and told him everything about my entanglement with Damien, carefully omitting anything that directly involved him.
Even so, he held his breath as he listened in silence. His fingers gradually tightened around my wrist.
His face was pale as he asked, "Did it hurt, when you jumped?"
"Not really," I answered with a faint smile. "Once you die, it doesn't hurt anymore."
He pulled me into his arms with so much force that I could feel his tears, hot and scalding, soaking through my nightgown. He sobbed quietly, unable to form a complete sentence.
Resting my head on his shoulder, I murmured, "It's all in the past."
"It's not your fault that you didn't push me aside."
This kind of deadly situation—I'd seen it far too many times in my past life beside Damien. I'd developed quick reflexes, but Julius was only 21 years old.
"You weren't supposed to know how to handle this," I said, wiping the tears from the corners of his eyes. "Our lives shouldn't have these kinds of dangers.
"I'm just an ordinary person. I only want to be a regular wife with you. You don't need to know how to push me out of the way in a car accident. You only need to remember what I like, my birthday, how to make dinner for me, bake a cake, or buy tiramisu..."
Finally, I pressed my forehead against his and told him with solemn sincerity:
"I love you, I really do. For now, there's no one I like more than you.
"I want to live this life with you, to spend a lifetime together. Please, stop overthinking everything, okay?"
---
Damien fell into a vegetative state.
When I received the news, I froze, my mind going blank.
He... had just failed like that?
I found it hard to believe.
In our previous life, I'd fought against him for so long. We'd faced countless murder attempts, schemes, and intrigues. I'd even stabbed him a few times, yet he always came through unscathed.
But now, just like that...
I suppressed the fear and unease in my heart and hugged Julius, who was sketching beside me.
