Julius didn't understand what we were talking about, yet he still held my hand tightly, unwilling to let go.
Damien's gaze lingered on our joined hands. After a moment, he rubbed his brow in fatigue and finally gave a bitter laugh.
He murmured, "Olivia, you forced me into this."
He began walking toward me.
The rumble of engines rose around us, accompanied by a rhythmic roar.
Blinding headlights bore down on us, the choking dust filling my lungs. I looked at Damien in disbelief:
"What did you arrange? To run me down?"
"It's not me!" he said, seemingly just as surprised. His wary eyes flickered, and he grabbed my hand, trying to pull me away.
It was already too late. The black car sped straight toward us.
Without hesitation, I pushed Julius aside.
The roar of the car engine seemed right in my ear. I felt the blood freeze in my veins, my mind a blank slate.
Then it seemed someone held me, spun me around, and shoved me away. I heard the heavy thud of a body hitting the car, followed by a soft, weakening groan.
It wasn't me...
The sting of my scraped wrist brought me back to awareness.
I looked up to see Damien sprawled in a pool of blood.
