Damien raised his head, his eyes unexpectedly calm.
"You always overestimate yourself."
"Arguing with me, yelling at me, even hitting me."
He touched his cheek where my slap had left a red mark.
"Olivia, have you considered that if I didn't like you, didn't tolerate you, you'd have been locked away long ago? You wouldn't be as free as you are now."
Seeing the wariness in my eyes, he chuckled softly, shedding his mask of submission. His gaze turned fierce once more.
He said, "Olivia, you left me no choice.
"Then don't blame me for taking my own path."
---
I had half a month of peace with Julius.
He never asked what had happened that day.
But I couldn't shake Damien's parting words from my mind, and my restless unease spilled over into Julius. It showed.
He set his laptop aside and sighed softly.
He pulled me onto his lap, rested his cheek against my skin, and whispered, "Olivia, don't be afraid.
"We'll handle whatever comes our way. We'll find a way, no matter what."
"What if he locks me up again? Would you come save me?"
"Of course!" he said without hesitation. "I'd break you out. We'd treat it like an escape game, so don't worry too much."
He ran his hand through my hair, his voice calm and steady. "I worked so hard to win your heart. I'll never give up on you."
"Julius Ashford," I murmured, my voice catching. "I'm sorry, but... should we..."
"We need to pick up some groceries," he interrupted gently. "We're out of potatoes."
---
Under the dim streetlights, with the breeze brushing against us, I stopped in my tracks and held his hand.
He turned to me, puzzled. "What's wrong?"
I stepped closer, wrapped my arms around his waist, and under the warm glow of the amber light, I stood on tiptoe and kissed him.
After a moment, I leaned my forehead against his. "I love you."
Julius smiled softly. "I love you too."
He cupped my face in his hands, leaned down, and captured my lips in a kiss, murmuring against them:
"Please don't talk about leaving me."
"Okay, I..."
"Olivia Moon."
A voice, low and cold, called my name from behind.
