I beat him.
Though he was far better than me, he deliberately held back this time.
Not only that, but his methods in this life had softened considerably. He no longer forced me into things I didn't want to do.
For the first time, I noticed the changes in him.
My death in our previous life seemed to have taught him to compromise.
I looked at him, my gaze complicated. "You've changed a lot."
His hands, busy wiping the golf club, paused briefly before he set it down as if nothing had happened:
"Really? Do you like this change?"
I lowered my head, silent.
He seemed desperate for an answer, his expression urgent, as though clutching at a lifeline: "You said you wanted respect and equality, that you didn't want me to force you into anything. I can do all that now... Do you like it?"
His expression was so eager, as if grasping at a life-saving straw with all his might, pleading urgently for my answer.
But I said, "Let it go, Damien.
"In this world, no one is truly incapable of living without someone else."
I spoke softly, "I don't need you to change for me. It's not worth it."
He stared at me, dumbfounded.
The wateriness in his eyes dimmed, masking the impatience, the impulsiveness, even the overwhelming possessiveness.
As he looked at me, his gaze filled with sorrow and unease.
The pain he felt in our past life was real, the suffering genuine. Losing me had truly tormented him.
"You're only saying this because you find me annoying and want to get rid of me."
His voice was soft. "If you cared about me even a little, you wouldn't be so cruel."
"Don't push me, Olivia."
He murmured, "If you block every path I have, I might lose control and take you again."
