Karma.
I lowered my gaze to his head resting in my lap, his soft hair brushing against me. Closing my eyes, I whispered:
"Do you know why I don't like green?"
"When I was twelve, you took me camping in the mountains. After an argument, you stormed off and left me behind."
"I was stranded in the wilderness for three days, starving and thirsty, crying until no tears would come. Eventually, I stumbled onto a road."
"Everywhere I looked, there was nothing but green. Day after day, I saw nothing else, constantly on edge, wondering if a wolf or bear might leap out at any moment..."
"Olivia—"
"Enough!"
I pushed him away and stood up, meeting his panicked gaze. Taking a deep breath, I said:
"You talk about karma, but how can you ever repay a decade's worth of sins?"
"When you teased a dog, it bit me. When you lost your temper at a party, I was the one apologizing and bowing. Even when you skipped class to date, I was the one who got scolded and beaten."
"It's a debt you can't repay, Damien. Your confessions, your pleas—they're meaningless. I heard them a thousand times in our past life, and they didn't work then. They won't work now."
"I may be too tired to hate you, but I will never forgive you—never!"
The grievances I'd suppressed, the days steeped in gray despair, resurfaced in my mind. My arms trembled as I fought the urge to hit or scream at him.
Tears streamed uncontrollably down my face, smudging my makeup and seeping into the collar of my shirt. The indoor golf course was vast, its beige synthetic turf swaying slightly, and my muffled sobs echoed through the empty hall.
Damien knelt there, dazed.
He repeated my words: "You'll never forgive me?"
With a hint of hopeless despair, he let out a bitter laugh:
"Olivia, there are things I don't want to use on you again."
"Don't force me."
---
I wiped away my tears and stood up, retreating as far as I could until my back hit the wall:
"I once thought that growing up, becoming an adult, would let me escape you and everything you represented."
"But you dragged me back, forced me to drop out, imprisoned me... and destroyed everything I had."
"I've already lived through a life so miserable it couldn't get any worse. There's nothing left for me to lose. At worst, I'll just die again."
"Not afraid anymore?"
Damien remained seated on the ground, meeting my wary, hostile gaze. A thought seemed to cross his mind, and his eyes grew cold.
The vulnerability vanished, replaced by a predatory gleam.
He chuckled softly:
"Olivia, you've experienced it, so you're unafraid."
"But what about Julius?"
