After his initial frenzy subsided, Damien approached me under the guise of collaboration.
On the surface, he was calm and composed, but there was an unmistakable air of menace. His gaze reminded me of a predator sizing up its prey.
He invited me to a golf course.
It was the most luxurious one, an endless expanse of green that made me feel momentarily dazed. I averted my gaze.
Damien covered my eyes from behind, his warm chest pressing against my back. "I remember you don't like overwhelming greens, so I had an indoor course custom-made."
Inside, a cup of lightly steeped coffee was placed before me, still warm.
He stared at me, his voice low. "Does he know all these little preferences of yours?"
I hesitated before shaking my head. "I don't know."
Damien's bloodshot eyes darkened, the corners tinged red. Calmly, he concluded, "He doesn't treat you as well as I do."
"That's not entirely true," I murmured, tracing the rim of the cup. "He's good to me too."
"How? Living off your money like a spineless leech?"
"Damien!" I frowned. "Can't you speak without being so harsh?"
He turned away dejectedly, biting his lip.
I rubbed my temple, feeling drained.
"Damien, I'm not a delicate person... I don't care how long the coffee is steeped, what type of dish I eat, or if someone reminds me of my cycles. None of it really matters to me."
In my past life, after Damien got married, he bent over backward to please me, taking over almost every aspect of my life.
He seemed determined to make me entirely dependent on him, obsessing over every detail—meals, bedding, seasonal wardrobes—all meticulously tailored to my preferences.
It appeared indulgent, but I disliked the feeling.
After ten years with Damien, I'd become much like him: someone who craved control and detested being led by the nose.
Even without the chaos between us, being with him would require one of us to change drastically.
But why should I?
Life is full of people and choices. Why force myself—or someone else—to change?
"I just want a simple, respectful relationship without all the drama. You can't give me that."
I sighed. "Damien, can't you just let it go?"
