When Damien returned, he brought someone with him.
He politely invited her into my apartment, adjusted his tie, and smiled at me.
"Do you know who she is?"
The woman was unremarkable—not rough-skinned, not smooth, not fat, not thin—utterly ordinary.
I frowned. "Who is she?"
"Julius's wife."
He smirked. "She even has a daughter with him. Her name is Cecily."
He didn't elaborate, but I knew what he meant.
The woman before me had been Julius's wife in my past life.
Silently, I pulled out a check and handed it to her.
She was overjoyed, but Damien frowned. "What's the meaning of this?"
I instructed someone to escort her out, then turned to Damien."I took away her beautiful marriage. It's only right to compensate her."
"You need to wake up," Damien snapped, clearly exasperated. "He abandoned you and married someone else! He's filthy!"
"And after being with you for so long, how much cleaner am I?"
I pressed my temple. "Damien, it's all in the past. Starting over is rare. Must you waste your energy entangling yourself with me?"
"You have so much to do—the Grant family hasn't even entered international market yet. The capital needs connections. Why spend your time on me?"
Damien stared at me intently, then suddenly asked, "Do you not hate me anymore?"
After a moment of silence, I turned away from his gaze. "Hating you is exhausting.
"I don't want to waste my emotions on you anymore."
When I had just been reborn, I hated Damien so much that I wanted to kill him.
But after meeting Julius, gaining wealth, and living a comfortable life... I rarely thought of hating him.
"Hatred", too, is an emotion that requires energy.
I had so many things to do every day. I didn't want to expend energy hating him.
Non-interference should've been our best ending.
But Damien clearly didn't think so.
"Waste?"
His disbelief was palpable, his eyes brimming with tears, like shattered crystals:
"To you, entangling with me is a waste of time, and hating me is a waste of emotion? He abandoned you to marry someone else, and you don't blame him. Instead, all you think about is him."
"I've done so much for you. I started a company so you could play at business. I taught you anything you wanted to learn. Your preferences during your cycles, your favorite dishes, the brands you love most... everything I've done for you, you ignore. You don't see any of it! Why? Why not? What makes me inferior to him?"
He seemed on the verge of madness.
Tears welled up in his beautiful eyes as he looked at me, half-accusation, half-pity, yearning for me to comfort him.
But I turned my head away, frowning. "Stop being ridiculous."
In that moment, the last light in Damien's eyes shattered completely.
