Damien finally gave up on me.
He seamlessly transitioned to his next girlfriend, throwing himself into managing the family business. He rarely attended classes anymore.
When I tentatively called him, I discovered I'd been blocked.
Ecstatic, I dragged Julius Ashford out late at night to celebrate with meals. Watching him groggily but stubbornly keep me company, I couldn't help but ruffle his hair.
He mumbled, "What's going on? Why are you so excited?"
Of course, I was excited.
I finally had a future that wouldn't be severed by outside interference.
I bent down and kissed his ear, delighting in the blush that crept up behind it as he buried his face in his arms, too shy to meet my eyes.
I poked his cheek. "Don't you think we're a great match?"
He tilted his head to look at me, his bright eyes filled with curiosity. "What's up?"
"Julius, let's get married."
Smiling brightly, I said, "Right now. Let's go to abroad."
---
But Julius didn't have a passport and couldn't go to abroad.
Instead, he took me to meet his grandfather.
Julius came from a modest background. His parents passed away when he was young, and his grandfather raised him despite battling chronic rheumatic conditions.
The elderly man trembled as he handed me a wrapped handkerchief. "Marrying into our family must be a grievance for you, my dear."
"Not at all!"
I took the handkerchief and unwrapped it to reveal a slightly tarnished gold bracelet with simple, understated patterns carved into it.
Overjoyed, I slipped it onto my wrist and waved my arm, showing Julius.
"How does it look?"
He smiled at me, his eyes moist with emotion. "Beautiful."
In my previous life, we never made it to the stage of meeting his family. Perhaps we thought we had all the time in the world.
But later, hiding together in a cramped slum with the stench of a nearby toilet, Julius had pulled a gold bracelet from his pocket with trembling hands.
"This was my grandmother's. Olivia, may I put it on you?"
I nodded fervently.
The stars in his youthful eyes shone a little brighter as he reverently lifted my wrist—
But Damien's men barged in.
The bracelet fell into the filthy toilet, lost forever.
