That night, while Damien slept, I went to the rooftop in my nightgown.
Sitting there, gazing at the opulent, decadent lights of the rich district, I smiled faintly.
With a push of my arms, my body soared into the void.
The sensation of weightlessness washed over me, and finally, I escaped this hopeless cage.
Damien thought that showing me Julius's mundane life would make me forget him.
But he was wrong.
Seeing Julius happy and content in his ordinary life only brought me peace of mind.
At that moment, there was nothing left in my barren, desolate memories worth clinging to.
In the final moments before my death, I thought:
If I could do it all over again, I would stay far, far away from Damien Grant. I would never provoke that demon.
---
I woke up in my final year of high school, freshly turned eighteen.
Damien was engrossed in his whirlwind romance with his eighth girlfriend, and I had yet to meet Julius.
Realizing I had been reborn, I rushed to the bathroom that night. Staring at the innocent, youthful face in the mirror, I cried and laughed until I finally buried my face in my hands, quietly sobbing.
After a while, my red, swollen eyes stared at the smooth, flawless face in the mirror. Trembling, I ran my fingers over my untouched skin.
Clutching the knife handle tightly, I raised my arm, and warm blood trickled down my cheek—
I destroyed my own face.
---
The wound was deep. Without surgery, it would leave a long scar.
It stretched across one side of my cheek, reaching down toward the corner of my eye.
My mother scolded me tearfully, lamenting my carelessness. The butler, Mr. Peters, came to visit, and when he saw my disfigured face, his gaze flickered. He set down the milk he'd brought and left.
He was likely off to report to his young master that my once-beautiful face was no longer worth keeping around.
I could already imagine Damien's cocked brow, cigarette pinched between his fingers, as he remarked with regret:
"I was going to keep her around for fun, but what a shame..."
