Cedric's office was spacious.
When I walked in, I saw him standing with his back to me, smoking by the floor-to-ceiling window.
Sunlight filtered through the smoke, illuminating the tailored patterns of his suit.
I nervously interrupted his contemplation.
"Director, I'm back. About my resignation..."
"Why did you resign?"
He didn't turn around, his voice cold.
I stammered, "There were some issues at home... but everything is resolved now."
I mustered the courage to plead, "Director, could you withdraw my resignation letter?"
"Withdraw?"
He let out a cold laugh, his voice suddenly sharp.
"Evelyn, do you think this company is your home? Come and go as you please? Unexcused absences, missing deadlines, and resigning without notice – do you think that's acceptable? Does your family rich?"
"I..."
"Last time, who had to pick up the pieces after you disappeared without a word? Who dealt with the partnership coordination? The original plans were delayed repeatedly because of you. Do you understand the damage caused to the company? Can you bear this responsibility, Evelyn?"
"... I'm sorry."
Beyond this, I had nothing else to say.
The mistakes I made were my own, and I intended to shoulder them. With my head lowered, I quietly replied, "I'll accept whatever punishment you decide."
"Punishment?"
Cedric suddenly turned and strode toward me, stopping just in front of me.
His blue eyes bore into mine, exuding an intense pressure, like tempered steel. His commanding presence was overwhelming.
"Evelyn, this is your life, your decision. What do you want to do?
"If you want to treat this job like a hobby, I can grant you severance and let you go home and raise children out of consideration for our past. But if you want to stay, pull yourself together."
"Be punctual, clock in, run projects, liaise with clients, fight for benefits, and build connections. There are more important things than those petty matters at home. Do you understand?"
...
I didn't understand.
I raised my head, looking at Cedric in confusion. My mind was a blank mess, and I could only rely on instinct to answer.
"I want to work."
Cedric stared at me for a moment, then picked up my resignation letter from the desk and fed it into the shredder in front of me.
"Get out," he said. "If this happens again, I won't even grant you severance."
