Lucinda made quite a commotion.
My father glanced at her with displeasure.
Mr. Fairchild, sensing the tension, smacked Lucinda on the arm. "What are you shouting for? If you upset Mr. Nightingale, you'll apologize immediately."
Lucinda protested loudly, "I won't apologize!"
Mr. Fairchild's face darkened. "What nonsense is this? I've indulged your tantrums long enough, but this concerns our connection to the Nightingale Family. You will apologize."
Lucinda's face turned ghostly pale.
I stood beside my mother, waiting as she finished her speech.
Once the lights brightened, a stream of guests came forward with gifts and congratulations.
It wasn't long before the Fairchilds approached us.
The moment I spotted Lucinda, my smile faded.
Noticing my expression, my father asked, "Do you know her?"
"Mr. Nightingale!" Lucinda interjected loudly, stepping forward and clinging to my arm with a flattering smile. "Of course, we know each other! Rosalie and I were classmates. She even tutored me at my house."
Mr. Fairchild feigned realization. "Oh, so Miss Nightingale is the deskmate you mentioned! I recall you saying her circumstances weren't great, and you made up an excuse about tutoring to help her financially, didn't you?"
The father-daughter duo performed their act seamlessly.
The nearby guests looked on with admiration, clearly envious of Lucinda's connection to me.
But my father frowned, pulling Lucinda's hand off my arm and softly asking me, "Rosalie, you don't look happy. Is what they're saying true?"
Lucinda, standing behind my father, shot me a warning look.
Back at school, I had feared her family's influence and obeyed her every cue.
One glance from her, and I would know what to say or not to say.
But now, I glanced at her briefly, then smiled slowly. "No, Father. That's not true. Lucinda used to lead the entire class in bullying me."
