I still remember my fate in the book—I died of cancer.
So I took the time to go to the hospital for a full check-up. The doctor said I was fairly healthy but emphasized the importance of maintaining good habits and a positive mood.
As it stands, there are some minor issues with my breasts and thyroid, but with proper care, it should be fine. It's nothing too serious.
I cursed Cody in my mind a few times. I'm convinced that the cancer I had in the book was definitely caused by the stress he put me through.
Thinking about Cody just annoys me.
He's the kind of person who doesn't know how to cherish what he has once he gets it.
But the moment he's about to lose me, he starts regretting it.
Now, every few days, he has people send flowers to my workplace. When I get off work, he's there at the office entrance, blocking me, asking for another chance.
No matter how cold I am toward him, he hasn't given up.
It's as if our roles have been reversed.
During this time, Elsa called me, saying that since I had broken up with Cody, I should stop stringing him along and let him pursue his own happiness.
I found it amusing. "The 'happiness' you're referring to—is that you? Then why is he still clinging to me?"
In the end, Elsa hung up in anger and embarrassment.
That day, as soon as I got off work, I ran into Cody at the company entrance again.
He was leaning against a Rolls-Royce, the setting sun casting a lonely shadow over him.
As soon as I walked out, he blocked my path. "Katie, today's my birthday. Could you spend it with me?"
"We've already broken up."
Cody's tone was somewhat aggrieved. "Katie, you've spent my last few birthdays with me."
I raised an eyebrow. "You never really celebrated my birthdays properly. So clearly, birthdays aren't that important."
I turned to leave, but Cody grabbed my hand, his head hanging low, looking pitiful. "I'm sorry, I was wrong. Can you forgive me just this once?"
"Nope," I said as I pulled my hand back. "Today, I'm meeting Evan's parents," I added, glancing toward the distance. "See? Evan's already here to pick me up."
Cody looked surprised. "You're meeting his parents so soon?"
"That's right. We might even get married soon," I replied with a cheerful smile. "But I won't be inviting you to the wedding—Evan would be upset."
My words drained the color from Cody's face.
He forced a weak smile. "Isn't that a bit too fast? You don't really know him."
"The fact that he loves me is enough," I said, giving him a sidelong glance. "It's better than being in a relationship for years without even a hint of marriage on the horizon, don't you think?"
Cody seemed like he wanted to say more, but I was already heading toward Evan.
I left Cody standing there, a bitter yet well-deserved smile spreading across his face.
