My mom had gotten up early and went to answer the door.
When she saw Cody and Elsa standing outside, her expression turned sour. "What are you doing here?"
Cody replied, "I came to visit you, Ms. Daniels. I should have come yesterday, but something came up."
My mom glanced at Elsa. "And what about her?"
Elsa smiled at my mom. "I'm Cody's friend. It seems Katie misunderstood the relationship between us, so I came here specifically to clear things up. Cody genuinely cares about Katie, and I don't want their relationship to be affected because of me."
My mom let out a cold laugh. "Oh really? Just friends? You two certainly have a special kind of friendship. Why are you clinging to Cody's hand so tightly? Are your legs too weak to stand on your own?"
Elsa's expression turned awkward as she quickly withdrew her hand.
Last night, I had already explained to my mom the exact reasons for my breakup with Cody.
Naturally, my mom was on my side, and she didn't bother to hide her disdain for Cody and Elsa.
My mom cut straight to the point, "Alright, Katie told me she's broken up with you. Go on and do whatever you need to do, but don't hang around my house. Seeing shameless people gives me a headache."
My mom was just shy of pointing directly at Cody and Elsa and cursing them out.
Cody's face darkened, while Elsa slightly curled her lips, then put on an expression as if she were suffering some great injustice.
"What should we do? It seems she doesn't believe we're innocent."
Cody snorted coldly, shouting into the house, "Katie, think carefully. Once a mirror is broken, it can't be mended. If you insist on breaking up with me, don't come crying to me later when you regret it—I won't take you back."
As I walked out of the house, I heard him spouting nonsense at the door.
When Cody saw me coming out, he relaxed slightly, but his tone was still infuriating. "Katie, I knew you'd come out. I figured you were just talking out of anger—you can't bear to break up with me."
Elsa's gaze toward me was filled with displeasure.
Seeing me look her way, she quickly plastered on an innocent smile. "Katie, I'm glad you've come to your senses. Cody and I have known each other for over ten years. If we were going to date, it would've happened long ago. There's really nothing between us."
Though her words sounded like an explanation, they were blatantly provocative underneath.
Just look at how close they are—they've known each other for over ten years, far longer than the three or four years I've known Cody. How could I possibly compare?
And yet, Cody didn't catch on at all. He nodded in agreement and then scolded me, "Katie, don't be jealous of everything."
Just then, Evan returned from his morning run.
Seeing Cody and Elsa standing at the door, he said, "Move aside."
His voice was cold, as if it carried the chill of the early morning.
Cody scrutinized him for a few seconds before instinctively furrowing his brow.
Judging by appearance alone, Evan was no less impressive than Cody.
The watch Evan wore, though understated, was worth seven or eight million.
Suddenly, Cody felt a sense of unease.
He didn't move and instead asked, "Who are you?" "Who are you?"
Evan glanced at me and replied, "I'm Katie's boyfriend."
"What?"
The confidence on Cody's face gave way to shock.
His face paled slightly as he forced a smile and looked at me. "Is he telling the truth?"
I squeezed past him, took Evan's arm, and lifted my chin slightly. "That's right. Don't come looking for me anymore, and don't call me either. It wouldn't be appropriate now that I have a boyfriend."
As I spoke, a faint smile appeared in Evan's eyes.
He added smoothly, "Since you've broken up with Katie, don't bother her anymore."
We walked into the house together.
Cody grabbed my sleeve, stubbornly asking, "Katie, he's not really your boyfriend, right? You just brought him here to make me jealous, didn't you?"
I brushed his hand away. "Cody, don't overthink it. I'm not someone who can't live without you."
I closed the door.
Leaving Cody standing there, looking lost and devastated. As for Elsa, her face darkened as she saw him like that.

"Who's feeling satisfied? Me!"
"Does this scumbag think he's some kind of currency? The female lead isn't desperate for him."
"Look at that scumbag looking all lost—serves him right!"
