Evan and I usually live in a neighboring city, about a three-hour drive from my home.
According to the plan, we would stay overnight here.
I would stay at home, while Evan would stay in a hotel.
My mom looked at Evan with the approving gaze of a mother-in-law evaluating her son-in-law, becoming more and more satisfied with him.
That very evening, she invited Evan to stay at our house.
"Don't stay at the hotel, we have a guest room. Evan, you can stay in the guest room," my mom said with a warm smile. "The pizza I make are delicious. I'll make some for you tomorrow morning."
Evan glanced at me, seeking my opinion.
I nodded. "Let's go with my mom's suggestion."
Evan had helped me a lot today, so it wouldn't be very considerate to send him off to a hotel.
Evan curved his lips into a smile. "Alright."
The bed at home was familiar and comfortable, and I slept soundly until dawn.
That was until a string of urgent phone rings interrupted my sweet dreams.
When I saw it was Cody calling, I immediately hung up.
A few seconds later, Cody called again.
The ringing, like a relentless summons, made it impossible to sleep.
Feeling irritated, I answered in a less-than-pleasant tone, "Cody, why are you calling so early in the morning? Is it something urgent?"
"I'm at your front door. Come and open it."
I was a bit confused. "You're at my front door?"
"I promised you yesterday that I'd come with you to meet your parents today."
Cody's tone was full of disbelief.
It was as if he thought that agreeing to meet my parents was some grand gesture on his part.
I sat up in bed. "Go home. I've already broken up with you, so you have no right to meet my parents."
Cody sounded impatient. "Katie, how many times do I have to tell you? Elsa and I are just friends—there's nothing between us."
Comments:
"Ugh, this scumbag. He's the one who ditched the female lead on her birthday to pick up Elsa, right?"
"He's also the one who didn't accompany the female lead to meet her parents yesterday, causing her to get ridiculed by her awful relatives, right?"
"And he's the one who shared a bowl of salad with Elsa yesterday, right?"
"How dare he accuse the female lead of being petty? Girl, you've got to wake up and not let this scumbag manipulate you!"
I reiterated, "Cody, we're done. You don't need to explain anything to me."
"Katie, be reasonable and stop being so stubborn." Cody probably hadn't expected me to be so firm, so his tone softened a bit. "Your aunt is always so snobbish. Since I didn't come back with you yesterday, I'm sure she must have said some harsh things to you. If she doesn't see me today, who knows what she'll say about you."
"You don't need to worry about that. I already introduced my new boyfriend to my relatives yesterday. Just focus on spending time with Elsa and stop concerning yourself with my affairs."
Cody laughed on the other end of the line. "Katie, stop lying. No one knows better than I do how much you love me. There's no way you could have moved on so quickly."
It turns out he knew better than anyone just how much I liked him, which is why he felt he could hurt me without consequence.
He understood that no matter how much he hurt me, I would forgive him and wait for him to come back.
The way Cody so easily trampled on my feelings made me feel disgusted.
Whatever little affection I had left for him vanished completely in the face of his shameless words.
I replied coldly, "Believe what you want."
To prevent him from disturbing my sleep again, I immediately blocked his number.
A little while later, there was a rapid knocking at the door.
