On Monday, I wore a professional suit with a pencil skirt, high heels, and applied a light makeup before heading to the company.
After graduation, I didn't rely on Derek's connections but instead sought out my own job interviews and entered the editing industry that I loved.
The rush-hour elevator was so crowded that I felt dizzy, perhaps due to the lingering effects of my fever. As I stumbled into the office, I thought I was going to fall hard, but a strong force pulled me securely into someone's arms.
"Be careful." The man's voice was pleasant but sounded familiar.
I immediately got up from his arms, but then I missed a step in my high heels and felt a sharp pain in my ankle. I instinctively drew in a breath.
"Did you twist your ankle?" The man's eyebrows furrowed.
Looking at his familiar, serious face, I pursed my lips, and my heart sank.
Axel Buck, one of Derek's good friends.
Unlike Derek's other friends, Derek was wary of him and wouldn't dare to act recklessly in front of him.
It was a coincidence that after I joined this company, Axel jumped ship from a foreign enterprise to become the department head here by investing in the company.
It must be said that his vision was excellent, and the company's profits became quite impressive after Axel joined.
"No problem."
Thinking about the faces of Derek's friends in that group, I didn't want to have anything to do with him.
I stood up but almost lost my balance again, fortunately, Axel reached out in time to support my shoulder.
"Still thinking about him?"
He meant that I was distracted and weak, which was why I tripped.
I was taken aback. What nonsense. Was this guy sent by Derek to annoy me deliberately?
I raised my head to meet his gaze. "No."
Stop pretending. He was in the group too. Who knows, maybe he had bet on how long it would take me to go back.
But Axel never talked in the group.
Even if he was the only decent person in the group, I didn't want to have any connection with people or things related to Derek.
"Thanks for earlier."
As I was about to push open the office door, Axel grabbed my wrist and carefully supported my arm. "Let me help you inside."
Confused by Axel's actions, I frowned and discreetly pulled my arm away from his grasp. I lowered my voice and said, "Axel, I broke up with Derek."
Meaning, I wasn't his friend's girlfriend anymore.
There was no need for him to do this…
Besides, there were people passing by all around us. He, Axel, was a golden bachelor, and I didn't want to stir up gossip.
"Uh-huh, I know. You finally got it."
As he spoke, Axel smiled, his smile was somewhat teasing and playful.
In my memory, he didn't smile much.
Also, what did he mean by ‘finally got it'?
Was he really Derek's friend?
Or was he intentionally playing with me now?
