It's said that the first time his parents came over, they were shocked by my audacious remarks before even entering the house.
His mother wanted to go inside to see what was happening, but Rodrigo convinced her to leave, saying it wasn't the right time.
Rodrigo's mother, meeting me for the first time, cautiously asked Rodrigo. "What if there aren't any dishes she likes on the table? Will she flip the table?"
He smiled. "Mom, it's not that serious."
On the contrary, his parents got along well with me.
I became the quietest person in the house.
Rodrigo's mother asked me tentatively. "Skye, why aren't you speaking?"
I thought for a moment. "I'm used to it. No one listened to me back home."
Rodrigo's mother started crying.
Later, a pile of assorted snacks was laid out in front of me.
"Skye, come, Mom bought you some candy. Try it."
Rodrigo's father, reading the newspaper nearby, chuckled. "Things for children."
They both watched me eat snacks for the whole afternoon.
When Rodrigo came home, his mother was chatting with me enthusiastically.
He came over, lifted me from the stool, and feeling my round belly, said:
"Mom, stop feeding her, we're leaving."
"Do we have to go on the honeymoon? Skye is doing well here."
Rodrigo said coolly, "What do you think?"
I was taken to the airport.
In the waiting room, I saw the news on the display screen that Calvin and Helena had been sent to prison.
Helena's mother called. "Skye... You're the only one left in our family. Your father is paralyzed. What should I do?"
I remembered how my mother, lying in her hospital bed, made many calls to my father.
It was eventually Helena's mother who answered.
She mocked my mother, saying she was dying and burdening others.
Hearing the crying on the other end of the line now, I said, "Give me the phone to Dad."
My father's muffled voice came through, seemingly calling my name.
I seriously asked, "Dad, don't you have a brain?"
"When you chose to cheat, you should have anticipated this day."
"As a man, you shouldn't regret your actions."
After saying that, I hung up the phone amidst my father's crying and yelling.
That night, I found myself on a beach thousands of kilometers away.
The moon hung high, and the sea breeze blew.
I chewed on the straw, lost in thought.
Rodrigo pinched my cheek. "Skye, what are you thinking?"
"I'm wondering how you ever fell for me."
I furrowed my brow. "You never even told me sweet nothings."
Rodrigo's expression softened. "Want to hear some?"
I jumped up excitedly.
He pressed his hand to my forehead, his voice gentle but helpless.
"You're acting like a little puppy, don't jump around like that."
The wind gradually quieted down.
Rodrigo spoke softly.
"My mother was best friends with your mother. But because your mother was too focused on romance, she broke off the friendship with my mother."
"Ah?"
This piece of information was hard to digest.
Rodrigo continued, "Before your mother passed away, she entrusted me to look after you. But your aunt was too fierce, afraid that I'd turn you into a good-for-nothing, so she forbade me from getting involved."
I was even more astonished.
So, all these years, he had been quietly watching over me.
Originally, I could have become a happy waste of space.
Rodrigo smiled. "Skye, you have a great aunt."
I thought for a moment. "Yes, she's a great aunt."
She taught me that living means knowing what you want.
Then you have to use every ounce of your wit and effort to get it.
I climbed onto Rodrigo, my eyes shining.
"I think being able to get you is also my skill!"
Rodrigo smiled, the corners of his lips curling. "Skye, I like your boldness."
The rest of the words were carried away by the wind.
Rodrigo lowered his head and kissed me.
The temperature around us rose.
I swayed happily. "Rodrigo, you're my sun, moon, and stars."
"That's what you said last time, try another one."
I mumbled, "I haven't said that to anyone else, I'll only say it to you from now on."
Rodrigo murmured, "Good, only say to me."
