Helena kept fussing about her hair until late into the evening.
My father was intent on having Calvin and Rodrigo stay over, not paying much attention to her mood.
After dinner, I led Rodrigo back to my room.
My room was right next to Helena's.
But it was much smaller than hers.
It was her mother who forced me to move in after she married into the family.
I pulled Rodrigo into the room. "Actually, you didn't have to stay. It would have been better for you to go home..."
He cupped my face and examined it carefully, only saying:
"After getting married, it's appropriate to meet your family. I just didn't expect it to be under these circumstances."
I felt dejected. "Your family definitely won't approve of me."
First, I tricked their son into marrying me, and my family is in such a state.
Rodrigo smiled. "As long as we truly love each other, they won't have any issues."
"Oh."
Even my reason for marrying him wasn't pure.
If he knew, would he regret it?
It was late at night. After taking a shower, I snuggled into my small bed.
Seeing that Rodrigo was still sitting beside me without moving, I enthusiastically pulled back the covers. "Come lie down with me."
He paused and looked away. "No need, I'm not sleepy."
I was about to say something else when suddenly, there was a noise from the next room that made my cheeks flush.
"...Helena, you're not planning to sleep tonight, are you?"
Calvin's voice carried a hint of gritted teeth.
Helena moaned in a state of disarray. "I want to make her regret it..."
Not like that, she's crazy...
The atmosphere became somewhat awkward.
The room was lit by a small lamp, and Rodrigo sat in the shadows, making it hard to see his expression.
"Skye?"
He suddenly called me, a simple name, strangely laced with a hint of intimacy.
"What?"
"Want to compete?"
I shivered. "Compete... Compete in what?"
Meeting his meaningful gaze, I blushed instantly. "Maybe... Maybe we shouldn't..."
It doesn't have to be so intense...
But just as I had covered myself and lay down, Helena's relentless taunts drilled into my head like an electric drill.
Unable to bear it any longer, I threw off the covers, grabbed hold of Rodrigo's tie. "Let's compete then..."
Rodrigo stood up in a second. "Okay."
Then he cradled my neck and kissed me.
A light fragrance enveloped me.
I lost my mind and hugged him tightly, feeling dizzy.
Rodrigo's body was warm, making me shiver.
My eyes were unfocused as I muttered,
"You... You should pace yourself. We don't have to win... I don't want to push you to your limits."
"Is that so?"
A light laugh came from Rodrigo in the darkness, and he asked half-seriously, "Shall I use half my strength then?"
"I think that's fine..."
I didn't push him to the brink.
He nearly pushed me to the brink.
Later on, Helena clearly started to become frustrated. "Calvin, get up! Don't pretend to be dead!"
I was still in a state of turmoil, struggling forward. "Why don't you let me rest? Look, they're quiet now..."
Rodrigo pulled me back. "We're not even halfway there."
"How much longer?"
"Probably... until morning."
