Reed angrily raised his hand, and I quickly pulled Amber behind me.
"You dare touch her? She's the apple of the Perez Family's eldest son's eye. If you're not afraid of dying, go ahead and try."
Reed pointed at us, the veins on his forehead bulging.
"Guadalupe, the family's about to go bankrupt. Are you really going to do nothing?"
"Nothing."
"What about that scandal you had with the teacher back in school? Aren't you afraid I'll tell the Perez Family?"
His disgusting face made me feel sick to my stomach.
My own family, using my past wounds to threaten and hurt me.
"Hah, go ahead and tell them."
"You! You're something else!" Reed, having nothing left to say, stormed off in anger.
I was too angry for words, but Amber came up and put her arm around my shoulder. "Don't be upset. Come on, let's go shopping—my treat."
When we got back to the Perez house, Kale was already home.
"Your brother came to see me today."
My heart skipped a beat. "What did he say?"
"He wants the project."
Kale looked calm, and I wasn't sure if Reed had mentioned those things.
"Guadalupe, do you want me to give the project to he? If you wish, I can…"
"Setting everything else aside, does the he even have the qualifications for such a partnership?"
Kale didn't respond, but it was obvious that the he wasn't qualified.
"Don't give it to them. No matter what he says, don't agree."
"He gave me some things and said if I didn't agree, he'd make them public."
My face turned pale, and my hands trembled with anger.
How could he be so despicable?
He knew very well that those were the scars I least wanted to face, the things that could truly ruin my life.
Kale placed the items in my hand, and I didn't see any anger or other emotions on his face.
"Don't worry, I won't let him release these. Leave it to me to handle."
I was a bit stunned. "You… you didn't look at what's inside?"
"It's all in the past. Whether I see it or not doesn't matter much."
He lowered his gaze and smiled at me, and suddenly I felt a bit dazzled.
I bit my lip and made up my mind.
"They're my photos."
Was it the softness of tonight's moonlight? Or maybe it was the bit of wine I had earlier, but Kale's gaze seemed so tender, like a whirlpool pulling me in.
His kiss sent shivers down my spine, and that night's madness was tinged with an indescribable emotion.
I don't know what method Kale used, but Reed actually didn't come to bother me again.
The rest of the Fisher family also stopped trying to contact me, and life became much more peaceful.
In high spirits, I was ready to drag Amber out for a shopping spree, but she rushed out of the room with a worried expression.
"My dad and stepmother are selling the estate my mom left before she died, and Reed bought it. He's going to demolish the entire estate and rebuild it. They kept it from me, and they're starting the work today."
Amber's mother passed away early, leaving behind very little. That estate was her dowry, and she had said on her deathbed that it was meant for Amber.
But at that time, Amber was too young, and without a written will, the estate was taken over.
"That was left by my mother. I can't let them ruin it like this."
When we got there, Amber was on the verge of tears.
"Don't worry, we've saved up enough money. We can buy the estate back."
I held Amber's hand, trying to comfort her, but with Reed involved, and his connection to this, I feared this wouldn't be an easy situation to resolve.
