It was in the early spring of the second year that I found out I was pregnant.
Perhaps it was because my mood had been consistently poor.
Or maybe it was due to the injury I sustained protecting Eliot that my health had suffered.
Throughout my pregnancy, my condition wasn't great.
The first three months were mostly spent in the hospital for prenatal care.
During the middle trimester, I did have two relatively peaceful months.
My relationship with Eliot seemed to have eased somewhat.
I heard that his wife had been living in abroad all along.
They didn't have a real marital relationship.
It was also rumored that they had already drafted divorce papers.
They were just waiting for the right moment to make it public for maximum benefit.
But none of this mattered to me.
I just continued with my regular prenatal checkups and focused on my pregnancy.
By the fifth month of pregnancy, I often felt the baby move.
That feeling was quite magical, and sometimes I couldn't help but tear up.
But more often, it was probably the hormones playing tricks on me.
Making it impossible for me to ignore his existence.
When winter arrived in the city, my due date was just twenty days away.
But on that day, an unexpected event occurred.
Eliot came back while I was basking in the sun under the eaves.
The sun was particularly warm that day, with no wind at all.
I fell asleep after basking in the sun for a while.
When I woke up, the maid told me that Eliot had come over.
I said "Okay" and didn't think much of it.
I had the kitchen bring out a small bowl of soup that had been kept warm and then went upstairs.
As I passed by Eliot's study,
I had no intention of stopping or listening to the conversation inside.
But by chance, I heard several familiar names mentioned by Eliot.
My father's name, and the name of his superior.
And my own name.
"Once she gives birth to the child, I'll naturally have other ways to gradually win her back."
"How could a woman bear to part with the flesh and blood she carried for ten months?"
"Let's not bring up what happened to Aurelia's father anymore."
"Just let it end here, rotting inside you."
"The people involved in this matter, keep their mouths shut."
"I don't want to hear another word about this ever again."
"This kind of tactic, using it twice is enough; overdoing it is counterproductive."
"You know, my goal was just to get her, not to really harm her loved ones."
"For her and the people related to her, I'm still soft-hearted…"
I stood outside the study, holding my heavily pregnant belly with both hands.
At that moment, hearing it firsthand,
I realized stupidly,
that I had fallen into a trap from the beginning.
From the start, he had been scheming against me.
And the misfortune that befell my loved ones was all his doing.
But what merit or ability did I, Aurelia, have?
Was it worth it for a man like Eliot to go to such lengths just to get me?
Actually, why did he need to go to such extremes?
Or did he think that someone like him didn't deserve pure affection?
Did he not believe that someone could love him just for the sake of loving him?
Who was more pitiable, me or Eliot?
I wanted to laugh, but I couldn't.
My belly cramped in pain, as if a knife were twisting through my flesh.
A moment later, a warm gush suddenly flowed out.
Dripping onto the floor, it was a pool of blood.
As I closed my eyes in a daze, I heard a cacophony of sounds.
The maids' chaotic shouts.
Eliot's trembling voice and his icy shaking hands.
I wanted to open my eyes and see his pitiful and miserable appearance at that moment.
But I really didn't have the strength.
I felt incredibly exhausted.
I want to sleep.
