Chapter 6

　　I quickly walked over, without hesitation, pulled back the covers, and lifted Tiffany out of bed.
　　Sure enough, I saw two hand warmers under her.
　　"Oh, how did these two hot packs get here?" I feigned surprise.
　　Tiffany realized that she had been caught and tried to dive back in to hide the evidence.
　　As if I'd give her the chance.
　　I nudged her aside with my hip and grabbed the hand warmers first.
　　Mama was looking for a thick quilt in the closet and, upon hearing this, turned around and her face fell at the sight of the hand warmers.
　　Tiffany chuckled nervously. "I, I don't know how the hand warmers got here. Maybe the kid put them there."
　　Mama was so angry that her face turned red.
　　If it weren't for the sleeping baby, she would have started yelling.
　　The dry daughter she treated with sincerity had played her for a fool.
　　A few-month-old baby could do such things?
　　I folded my arms and watched the drama unfold.
　　Tiffany tearfully explained that she was afraid her sister-in-law would be hard to get along with, so she didn't want to go home and resorted to this trick.
　　"And the baby's fever is real."
　　She seemed to grasp at a lifeline, seeing a chance to turn things around.
　　Indeed, the baby was indeed running a fever.
　　The snow outside was getting heavier, and I sighed softly.
　　My mother-in-law's expression softened somewhat, but it was still far from pleasant.
　　I didn't hear any more sounds.
　　However, Tiffany had planted a seed of distrust in my mother-in-law's heart.
　　Before leaving, my mother-in-law said, "Once Xiao Nuo gets better, you can move back home."
　　In the following days, Mark's son got into a fight and he was too busy to come and see her.
　　Unexpectedly, Tiffany suddenly became well-behaved.
　　However, she went out frequently, and each time she returned with some sort of injury.
　　She also became increasingly restless.
　　I couldn't care less about her. Since the last incident, my mother-in-law had become much colder towards her.
　　But there was something that concerned us.
　　The baby's high fever kept recurring and wouldn't go away.
　　Medicine had been taken, and we had visited the hospital several times, but there was no improvement.
　　My mom sat on the sofa, unable to focus on the TV, sighing with worry.
　　Compared to Tiffany's calmness, my mother-in-law was genuinely worried about the baby.
　　She talked to me about it. "I want to spend some money to get her a full-body checkup. The high fever has left him listless and weak, it's heartbreaking."
　　I looked away from my phone. "Okay, I'll go with you then."
　　Tiffany was always out, so we couldn't rely on her. Leaving my mom to take the child alone was also not reassuring.
　　Just as we were talking, Tiffany came back from outside.
　　Today, her face was marked with bruises.
　　The wounds looked like she had been hit.
　　She avoided eye contact and had been avoiding me these past few days. She nodded hastily and was about to go back to her room.
　　I called out to her and told her about taking Xiao Nuo to the hospital.
　　Tiffany was clearly distracted and nodded perfunctorily.
　　But at that moment, I heard her inner thoughts.
　　"Fool woman, I give him cold-water baths every night. What's the use of a full-body checkup?"
　　"Jay hasn't been back for days. How am I supposed to seduce him?"
　　"The man didn't give me much time. I need to think of something."
　　I was thunderstruck by her words.
　　How could there be such a cruel mother?
