Elise sat at her desk, trying to make sense of the USB drive swap. No matter how hard she thought about it, she couldn't figure it out.
She hadn't had any conflicts at work—no one she could think of who might hold a grudge against her.
She kept replaying it in her mind, wondering if she'd missed any details or maybe just made a mistake herself.
But after thinking it over all morning, she was still clueless.
"Elise!" Killian's footsteps approached, and she looked guilty. "I heard you like strawberry cake, so I got this to say sorry for accidentally spilling on your clothes last time."
Elise smiled politely. "It's okay, it wasn't a big deal. But I'm afraid I can't eat this cake. Sorry about that."
Killian was too surprised to respond.
"I'm pregnant, so there are a lot of things I can't eat. They make me nauseous…" Elise said, pointing to her growing belly. "Thank you for the thought, though. I really appreciate it."
Killian's disappointment was obvious, her eyes blinking as if she was about to cry.
"But just a little would be okay, right? Or… do you dislike me?" Killian wouldn't give up, setting the cake box firmly on Elise's desk.
Elise looked at her helplessly. "Killian, it's not like that. I really can't eat it. Why not give it to Evelyn or Hannah? Hannah loves sweets."
"Alright then, I'll give it to Hannah," Killian sighed, taking the cake box back and heading toward the music department.
Elise watched Killian's figure fade away, sensing her disappointment, but what could she do? Her appetite had been fickle lately, and she'd cut back on sweets.
No sooner had Killian left than Evelyn appeared at Elise's side.
Evelyn pulled up a chair and sat down. "Elise, did your USB drive really go missing?"
Elise nodded. "Yeah, this one I have isn't mine—it doesn't have the scratch mine does. And when I checked it last night, there was nothing on it."
"That's really strange." Evelyn thought for a moment. "Oh, I saw Killian a moment ago. Did she come by to see you?"
"She came by to apologize for spilling her drink on me last time and offered me a strawberry cake. But I told her I couldn't eat it and suggested she give it to you or Hannah. She ended up going to find Hannah."
"She went to find Hannah?"
Elise took a sip of her tea. "Yeah, I thought it'd be a good fit since Hannah loves sweets."
Evelyn chuckled. "Why didn't you just tell Killian to give it to Jakob, and he could give it to Hannah?"
"So, you know too…" Elise deliberately left her words hanging.
"Hannah's been trying to impress him for a while. It's hard not to notice," Evelyn guessed correctly.
"Honestly, Hannah isn't bad for him. They're both songwriters. They'd probably have a lot to talk about."
"To forget someone, you need to jump into the next relationship quickly, so I think him being with Hannah is definitely a good thing."
"Stop saying that," Elise muttered, her whole body tingling with embarrassment. "Right now, the most important thing is finding my USB drive."
"Haha, true enough!" Evelyn eyed the computer screen thoughtfully. "Have you thought about installing a mini pinhole camera on your monitor? I mean, our cameras seem to have a few blind spots."
Elise felt uneasy. "Is that really necessary...?"
Although she usually didn't do anything strange in front of her computer screen, it felt like treating someone in the office as... a potential thief.
"Of course. If this keeps happening, it'll affect you and your work." Evelyn immediately searched for pinhole cameras and pulled up some options for Elise to review.
"Alright." Elise relented. "You do have a point."
